Kitchen cabinet sliding door screws

Hi, I'm new here so please forgive me if this post is in the wrong area.

I have just bought an apartment which has an IKEA fitted kitchen. I have no idea which model it is.

Above the sink there is a cabinet with two rectangular sliding doors. On one of them, the rail bracket on the door is loose (the hook-like piece screwed into a slide on the door, from which it hangs). The hex-screw's head has been stripped by whoever tried to tighten it.

I can't tighten it, and I also do not particularly want to have a cabinet door which looks like it's hanging off. This also affects the smooth rolling of the other door.

I will try to take a photo later today but if anyone has any idea if/where I can buy replacement screws, I'd appreciate it.

Many thanks

Re: Kitchen cabinet sliding door screws

Hi Colin=

Remove the screw, and take it to any good hardware store and ask for a suitable replacement.

If you're close to an IKEA store, you might be able to get a replacement from them. Just take the worn screw to the "Spare Parts" section of the store and show it to a clerk.

I doubt it's a special production part.

Re: Kitchen cabinet sliding door screws

Hi, it turns out that it's not a screw. It's a sliding door bracket for a glass "Avsikt" door with an "Integral" rail system from about four years ago. Here is a link to a photo I took of it:

http://ams.dslr.it/~colin/ikeabracket.jpg

I took it to IKEA in Delft and they were utterly unhelpful, both the service and kitchen departments (the lady at the kitchen department even denied that it was an IKEA part).

So IKEA themselves can't help me. According to the instructions left behind by the previous property owner the part number is 114295. Does anyone anywhere in the world have one of these? I'd gladly pay for it, and for its postage.

Yours hopefully

I've been blogged!
Re: Kitchen cabinet sliding door screws

If this is what I think it is, you have in your possession one of, if not THE, most dangerous item IKEA has ever sold during my "tenure" of dealing with them - that's over 22 years!

Dulci will be along later to confirm this for me, but these door are amazingly hazardous, IMO , for the exact reason that you have experienced - that roller can only be tightened so far, and if you go the slightest it too far, you strip the fitting, and it loses its ability to hold the doors in place tightly, properly, and safely.

When that happens, you run the risk of having the door fall from the bracket and hitting who- or whatever may be underneath it.

At Dulci's house, she installed some pieces of 1x4" lumber to keep the doors from falling down. At this point, they are held in place by the rails on top, but they ride along the wood at the bottom.

If you haven't already, I'd suggest you remove the doors completely, until you can find replacements for your brackets. You should know that these doors are discontinued, so it may be difficult to find replacements.

Agreed, it was a poor design originally, but those sliding doors were so nice. There's no chance to find a replacement part, I know, I searched for one myself. But there's a simple fix for this problem that doesn't require a new roller hanger: with the hanger in place, drill a hole through the soft aluminum window frame right where that hex key adjustment opening is, then use a small nut and bolt to secure the hanger to the frame. Do that mod for each roller hanger, and you won't have any worries of the door slipping or falling out.
