I had a similar question...for anyone with Pragel. The extra laminate banding, is it just enough to do the edges (for a cut)? Or enough to do the whole back side? I have 2 crazy ideas...either using a piece of pragel cut for a breakfast bar (leaving the back needing edging), or using a piece of birch countertop to sit over the Pragel countertop and (hopefully) complement the cabinets. Would that look too weird, or should I be worrying about matching the Pragel laminate?
Do you mean that you would have two surfaces on your breakfast bar, the Pragel on one side and butcher block on the other? If so, I don't think that would look good. You would have trouble with the seam, I think, also. You can get the butcher block countertop in a 39 inch width from IKEA, which would be a better option. You could also tile the breakfast bar for a custom size.
Eva, I mean option one is that my regular countertop would be pragel and my breakfast bar (raised with the slanted capita legs) would possibly be birch butcher-block. Would that look like a big oops or a deliberate trying to showcase the matching cabinets?
What I'm worried about is that I'd like to have aPragel breakfast bar (cut to size), but that would mean a back seam that is open and ugly. From what I understand, the pragel countertop only comes with edge banding enough to cover a cut on the width, not enough to do the whole back end I had the crazy idea of the FX sheeting on the back edge of the breakfast bar, I just don't know which option would look best. I suppose I could also just purchase some black laminate banding. What should I do?
Like I always say, half of the reason I hang on this site is to borrow taste!
Agreed. I like the idea of echoing the cabinet color/tone in the breakfast bar, separated by the grounding element of the darker countertop. See? You do have taste!
As for the original question, I don't think you can purchase extra edge banding, but you could put out a request on the Swaps and Exchanges forum and see if anyone has any additional that they won't be using. Worth a shot!

Thanks Eva & Susan, I knew borrowing your taste would work! I couldn't tell if that was a crazy idea or not!
What's the edge on that Numerar Birch butcher-block like?It has a square edge so I can (well, I'm not allowed any tools with an "on" switch, so my family will)make a clean cut, right? I need to make it breakfast bardepth (I'm thinking 15" is that good? Is it 12") And, someone was suggesting a particular brand of Tung Oil that wasn't the Ikea one, right?
15" is a nice size for an overhanging bar. 12 inches is minimum. Since yours will be set on legs, you'll want to make sure you get the proper knee clearance. You'll probably do best just mocking it up and sitting there and seeing what works.
Lee Valley sells pure tung oil that is food safe. Some tung oils that you get at the store are not pure tung oil and are not food safe.
You do have to do multiple coats of the tung oil, letting it dry in between, and sanding in between. anywhere from 5-15 depending on what you want as a finish.
