Hardware and Other Details - Adel Birch

Hi there,

Thanks to Eva, I now have a really great kitchen layout. Now I am considering the details, and would love to know what everyone thinks.

The current countertop favorite is attached below. For various reasons we have chosen laminate - the pattern is "concrete stone" and is a light grey.

I don't have the backsplash completely worked out yet, but I would love to utilize the "flowerpot" tiles from Earth Song Tiles - (they are the blue/yellow flowery/scroll tiles) plant and flower tiles The large 9 x 12 would be for behind the stove, and I'd like to work the other accent tiles in with the rest of the backsplash with solid field tiles. I haven't picked exact colors yet (the accent tiles can be custom colored also) so suggestions for color combinations would be appreciated. I have been thinking along the lines of greens or blues.

Based on these elements, what kind of handles/knobs/pulls do you think would look good? I was kind of trying for an updated art nouveau/arts and crafts feel, but most of the hardware I've seen in those categories seem too mission or too rustic.

Also, any thoughts on flooring possibilities?

I am also attaching the floorplan - it's just a small 10 x 11. Thanks in advance for your input!

I think slate would be gorgeous with the tiles and birch cabinets for flooring...and pull the green or blue from that palette. For handles, I am thinking antiqued bronze, maybe hammered copper.

I like these from coolknobsandpulls.com

Re: Hardware and Other Details - Adel Birch

I took our Adel Birch in a different direction from you, but if you'd like to see it in a similarly small space (10x12), it's in my blog. I was wondering if you have an idea on your lighting fixtures and/or faucet/sink look yet? You may want to make sure that your pulls and fixtures all look good together...? Just a thought!

Re: Hardware and Other Details - Adel Birch

B - Your kitchen looks fabulous! I love the mossy wall color - and the granite is beautiful - very sophisticated. I had thought about the lighting and faucet coordination as well. I thought that I might pick the handles/knobs first and choose lighting from there. I am planning on having a white sink and probably white faucet since all of our appliances are white too.

Eva - It's funny that you mentioned slate, because that has been the floor tile that caught my attention from the beginning. I was just a little worried that it would overwhelm or fight what I'd like to do with the backsplash. If I can afford it, I'd like to go with the handmade field tile from Earth Song as well. If I can't afford it, I was thinking just a plain glazed tile from American Olean - maybe in their wedgewood or sage colors. What do you think about combining the accent tiles with slate on the backsplash? I'm just afraid it would be too much. Thanks for the knob suggestions. Do you think that cup pulls would work for the drawer bases? I like the copper finish idea.

Re: Hardware and Other Details - Adel Birch

I think slate would overwhelm the tiles you want if you use it in the backsplash. I'd go with simple for the field, maybe tumbled travertine. You can use cup pulls on the drawers, you'll need 2 on the bigger drawers, but I don't think cup pulls are the right feel. They seem too 30s-cottage to me, even in the bronze. They had some pretty glass cup pulls in bronze and I almost posted the pic, but for some reason it just didn't seem like it would work.

Re: Hardware and Other Details - Adel Birch

You know, Doreen (dafogle) has Adel Birch, with white appliances and slate backsplash. I believe she has a bamboo floor. So, if you do a search for her pictures, that might help you get an idea of how the slate, birch and white appliances look together. I don't remember what hardware she ended up going with, but I'm sure she's around!
