Hi there. I'm just wondering how decent these IKEA butcher block countertops are - probably the oak we're going for?Any of you out there think about getting them elsewhere as the IKEA ones looked cheap and the finish bad? Or did you find that they are exactly the same quality from IKEAbut half the cost so went with them? I haven't seen them close up yet so I'm not saying they do look cheap - it's just that I'd be interested to hear from you guys whether or not they are up to scratch.

I always think it's the worktops, handles and flooring/tiles that will make a kitchen look really good. The units are secondary.

Any big close-up pics from anyone out there?

Hi Mollie. I have butcher block on either side of my stove in my current kitchen. It's much thicker than the IKEA version. I still like the look of the IKEA one and will be doing it in my new kitchen. I figure if a few years down the road I can afford granite I won't feel bad ripping it off!

I am sure you can't beat it for the price. I would love to see what people have to say who actually have it in their kitchen.

I'll be taking some shots of my kitchen tonight - and I have miles of PRONOMEN. Gorgeous, gorgeous miles of the stuff. And I do my prep right on it.

IKEA continues to excel throughout the ENTIRE kitchen line - not just in the boxes and interiors. Their hardware and countertop options are really nice too.

To tide you over, here's a picture from when I was just finishing up our breakfast kitchen. That's more PRONOMEN finished with tung oil.

OK Lisa, that looks good. What colour wood is that worktop as it looks fairly dark? And I know IKEA worktops have blunt square edges but yours looks as though you've softened that slightly.....which is good. Is that something you did or are they not as sharp square as I thought?

That's the beech with an oil finish. The tone is very warm. The shelves above are birch (those now come in beech, birch and oak, btw ). There's a factory finished bevel on the PRONOMENS. On one of mine, where I had to cut it and the finished edge is obvious, I used a Dremel tool to bevel it myself.

IKEA also sells a nice cove molding that will finish off behind your countertop and cover the required 1/8" gap (what is that metric?). You can see the molding on the right side of that counter I posted.

I did not use the cove molding in my kitchen since I used the IMPERATIV line and that too covers the gap.

When I take my kitchen pictures I can show you an L shaped joint too.

Is the DREMEL tool something you bought from IKEA or a hardware store?

Sarah, I know you asked Lisa, but I'll chime in. Dremel, the 2nd best invention of the 20th century (except duct tape & velcro!). Dremel has saved the day on all parts of my kitchen install, Here's a link...

Hope this helps!

Oooooh, thanks for that DeDe - my husband will be in heaven looking at those tools. He is going to install our kitchen himself! He has done it before, tho' a smaller version, so hopefully these tools will do him proud!

What's bad is that we were given a dremel as a wedding shower gift (we have funny parents ) and we haven't even taken it out of the box (5 months into our home gut/ remodel) because we don't know what to do with it! We've done plumbing, reframed windows, done drywall all with the help of google but we still have no clue what to do with the dremel. maybe i can find a website for that

Did you have any places where two pieces of the countertop met at right angles? We have decided to go with the samePRONOMEN top but I am worried about the look where a beveled edge meets another beveled edge. That should create a small valley which may not be attractive. I know the other style solid woodtop has squared edges but it's about twice as expensive.
