I finally installed my Knape & Vogt Rotary Recycling Center in my 37" corner cabinet. I've received a few questions about it, so I thought I'd post pictures.
I hate corner cabinets for the usual reasons (things fall off the rotating susan, I can't reach all the way back), and I couldn't fit 15"w base cabs on either side of the corner, ignoring the way back part of the corner.
The recycling center comes with 3 tall kitchen bins that circle a center post, and they're really easy to install and use. I'm going to use one bin for trash, one for recycling, and one for storage with a compost bin on top. Yes, there's space wasted in the way back, but I figure that space would be wasted anyway.
As you can see from the pictures, the bin does jut out when spun, so you can sweep scraps right in. The only thing I'd like to change is to put 153 hinges so the corner cabinet door opens a little wider. It installs with a few screws to the floor of the cabinet and a few to the top. I was worried about the top screws since I have a quartz countertop, but the correct placement has the top screws going into the bracer bar at the top of the cabinet anyway. And actually the pole with bottom and top fittings fits tightly into the cabinet without the screws, but I used the screws anyway.
One note about installation -- I'm an idiot and couldn't figure out the screws that keep the bottom white plastic collar secure to the post (and the instructions are only slightly better than Ikea instructions). The screw comes screwed into its sleeve, but you remove the screw, put the sleeve in the groove on the inside of the collar, then screw the screw in from the outside. Works beautifully.
Hooray! Finally a bird's eye view of this recycling center.
I was wondering about the "sweep-in-ability" of this unit, and now I know! I'm definitely getting this for my corner cabinet. Thank you thank you for the pictures.
The 153 degree hinges you speak of...are these IKEA items, or purchased somewhere else?
Also...if you don't mind answering, I wonder where you purchased the recycling center and if you think you got a good deal. It seems there is a wide range of prices out there.
Finally...it seems this unit comes in two sizes (no?)...which one did you use?
Thanks Greenie!
I'm a huge recycler (sadly dependant on many cans of Diet Pepsi to get through the day), so having such a large recycling bin is a huge bonus.
Also, the height of the bins is adjustable -- you just slip the spidery frame and the plastic collars to the height you want and then tighten the screws in the sleeves in the bottom collar. The picture at Rockler and Kitchensource shows the bins pretty low, but I put them quite a bit higher, so there may also be things I can store underneath them. Cutting boards, rolls of aluminum foil... who knows? I think having the bins higher makes it less messy to sweep scraps in.
The 153 hinges are from Ikea -- they open wider than the standard 130. As far as I can tell, the unit comes in one size but there may be a version that attaches to the door rather than a central post (although I'm not sure how that would work).
I purchased mine from Rockler.com because it was cheaper than at Kitchensource or Amazon -- quite a bit cheaper. It was $145, which is quite pricey to me, but much less than I found it for elsewhere ($258 before the sale price of $232 at Kitchensource). I just noticed that Organize.com sells it for $129 through Amazon, but with shipping it came to $159 (Rockler gave me free shipping). Oragnize.com sells it directly for $129, but with shipping it came to $149.

I must say, a few weeks later, that everyone in the family is loving this trash solution. Except for the fact that half the time I still open the door at the sink looking for the trash can, the K&V recycling center is the best. The bins really go in and out easily, hold a ton, spin quietly, etc. Can't recommend it enough (well, if I were being paid by K&V, or one of the stores selling it, I might say it increases the hair on mens' heads and vanishes forehead wrinkles... but I'd need to be paid well... ).

Well...that's going to be a tough one to overcome.
I still go to open the silverware drawer in the location it was in two kitchens ago. The cabinet, and the wall it was on, are both long gone, but my feet still take me there....
wow, wow, wow! Thanks so much! I've long since wanted a better solution for that danged corner. Now I've got one! Thanks Greenie!
Now, if I only had me a new IKEA Kitchen...
Susan
