I remembered the wrong measurement for the soffit height on the main wall of cabinets-I thought it was 9 inches (because that's convenient and perfect, and what I wanted it to be, so it stuck) when it's really a little over 12". I bought a 39 inch cabinet so that the bottoms would be at the same height, and the top would be the same height (up against the ceiling) as the cabinet over the fridge. So, do I trim out the top, and have that look a bit off from the top of the fridge cabinet (regular depth, not the super deep fridge style), or do I add trim to the bottom and have the bottoms mismatched? Or do I just skip trim all together and live with the 3" height difference? The fridge cabinet cannot be lowered. The cabinets on the soffit wall are within arm's reach- not sure where the counter tops will end up yet, probably within 24" of each other.
Also, I just noticed on my order- I got the same 130 degree hinges for my WHZ3015 as I did for all of my other cabinets, not the Ferrari hinges (but it is in Birch effect at least). We just bought the cabinets last week- will they sell me the hinges separately since they entered it wrong or am I stuck since I accepted it?
I don't understand the setup with the soffit and the fridge cabinet. Could you post a picture or drawing?
The Ferrari hinges for the Horizontal cabinets come with the cabinet, they are not sold separately so you should already have them. If you have an extra set of 130's you can return them unopened.
Are the horizontals sold in Birch effect now? That is news!
I'm pretty sure the Ikean we dealt with tried to work around the white-only box by switching it to the birch effect box and we we didn't get the hinges as a result (although that cabinet looked like it had been previously assembled, so maybe someone kept those). I checked the draft order and the total price is lower than the price listed both online and in the catalog, but it does have a different article number. We need to go back for more shelves, I'll check when we're there and let everyone know what I find out.
So the taller cabinet next to the fridge and the shorter cabinets under the soffit do not touch each other, right? I would line up the 39" one with the top of the over-fridge cabinet and have the distance between the cabinet and counter be 3" higher in that area. Sometimes it's useful to have an area of countertop with more clearance anyway, for taller appliances or the occasional tall bouquet of flowers.
If they gave you the cabinet box for the 15"Hx30"W regular (non-horizontal) cabinet then it will not fit the door correctly. The door and cabinet for the 30"W "horizontal" cabinets are about a 1/2 in. wider than the other 30"W cabinets. The reason for this is so that they can use the 30"H doors (which are closer to 30 1/2" H) sideways and not have to manufacture a special door.
If they still only come in white, one way around the problem is to cover the cabinet pieces with a sort of wood-look contact paper. Here is a thread where someone did just that: new birch effect horizontal cabinet boxes
No- they'll be 2-3 feet away, but on an adjacent wall.. I'm kind of looking at all of the new storage space in there now (we added 60" of base cabinets- starting from 24"- not counting the sink in either number) and wondering whether I even want to put it up. If they had included any shelves for the upper cabinets, I would have just about everything back where it's supposed to live, except the stuff that's going in the drawer bank that will go in once a window is replaced/raised a foot.
As far as the upper, it's already installed and too much work to worry about- I would have preferred the lift up, but we couldn't decide between the two, so oh well! We'll exchange the door for two of the other kind when we go back for shelves- at this point, I'm just glad to have a kitchen again!
But the flowers go on top of the tv- I added a shelf the length of the tv that's about the same depth as it needed to be away from the wall, so my flowers "float" there.
How great is it that you have so much more storage!! Congratulations on being close to finished!
We would love to see pictures if you'd like to share.
Best wishes,
Gloria
I'll definitely post pics once we're closer to being done. The cabinets were a spontaneous demo so we could get the floor in, and we haven't found a fabricator for our stainless steel counter tops yet. But it's close enough to functional- I never thought I would be this happy to hear a dishwasher running!
