Here is my first pass on an Adel kitchen for our 1930s house. Since it's old there are issues:
1. The tiny "window" toward the top of the north (per layout) wall is really a little fuse box currently accessible through the cut out back of a wall cabinet. I'd like to repeat this with new cabinets, assuming it's still OK with code.
2. I'd like to do as little moving of water/venting, etc., hence the sink/ cooktop are where they are in the current configuration.
3. Working clockwise from the north wall, the doors go to the living room, a broom closet, the back hall, and a half bath (east wall). The extra large window on that wall is really an arched doorway to the breakfast nook.
4. I'm trying to create a "hutch" effect on the north wall. I'm also hoping to ease traffic issues by taking the base cabinets down in depth. There's a light switch to the east of the living room door that will prevent me from going the full width with that second tier of cabinets. Any ideas on how to make this look OK?
I had problems getting the cabs exactly where I wanted them.
Also, I'm not wild about the cover panels, so I've left most of those off until I decide what I'm using. Countertops will be quartz, as yet to be determined.
Well, here it is! Many thanks for looking and feedback

Could you explain what you mean about not liking cover panels? I've only seen alternates used on islands, not on regular wall and base cabinets. They are usually considered to complete the illusion of solid wood cabinet boxes....
To deal with the hutch and the light swith problem - there are three obvious solutions
First - don't do the middle tier in the hutch -just regular wall cabinets
Second - move the light switch
Make the entire hutch narrower (maybe 3 15" instead of 3 18")
I don't think there is a way to make the second tier narrower that will look right. Every solution like that is going to look odd.
As far as making the base cabinet depth shallower, you won't really be able to do that and have drawers in the base. Youl could switch to 12" deep drawers or put in doors and shelves. I understand that the drawers don't go all the way to the back, but I don't know how far. So maybe post this problem in the modificaton forum where the experts will help you.
I really don't like the fact that your cooktop is right up against the oven cabinet. I really recommend that you have prep space and landing space on both sides of a cooktop. Because the window limits how far we can push that cooktop, I took 6" off and put in a 30" cooktop. You really will like to have elbow room and landing space on your left.
I also didn't know what you have 2 fan cabinets stacked one on top of the other over the cooktop. I replaced it with one cabinet that is 24" high so the fan is at the right height yet the top of the wall cabinets line up.
I don't know if you have a specific use for that shallow cabinet at the end of the island, but if you don't, I turned it around and made it into a trash/recycling pullout. It would make for a very efficient clean up zone. You can stand in one place and scrape/rinse/load without taking a step.
I have no idea how you are going to get away from cover panels on the rest of the wall and base cabinets, but here is the alternate I've seen done for islands. This is Ikea countertop used on the top and sides of the island. There is an example like this in the new kitchens catalogue as well.

I'm just not wild about Ikea's cover panels. I'm going to use panels, but may go with painted plywood trimmed to look like the door fronts or bead board or (when reality sets in) I may even go with the Ikea panels.
I'd really love to get rid of the countertop on the north wall "hutch", it simply catches junk and isn't truly useful. I'm not sure where I'd move the switch, so I think you're right about making it narrower.
Also, I didn't mean I would modify the base cabs. Oh the horror! I want to use the 12" ones, which are about half the depth of what's there now.
Thanks for fixing the cooktop area. I got the two fan cabs in and couldn't get the one out. I was trying for what you have.
I've gone back and forth with the cab on the island end. I'd like to use it for everyday dishes since it's right by the breakfast nook. But I like the idea of the trash pullout, too.
WIth careful planning and some modification, you can put a pullout under the sink.(but it won't be as high or maybe as deep) Do search in modifications, there are lots of examples.
