We decided to go with Adel Brown, but unfortunately the frames come in birch. I noticed that even the installers at Ikea, while they had convered the frame edges, one could see the birch color (not to mentione the insides which is pretty obvious).

Has anyoneany experiences, advice. I also would like clear glass, instead of frosted, so I'm thinking ofbuying regular cabinets, and asking a glass door company touse clear tempered glass.

Anyideas would be appreciated

We're thinking of going with Adel brown Ikea kitchen cabinets, but unfortunately the frames come in birch. I noticed that even the installers at Ikea, while they had convered the frame edges, one could see the birch color (not to mentione the insides which is pretty obvious).

If we go with this color, I may have to stain the frame (can this be done on laminates)?

Also I'll be going with a few glass cabinets, but I don't like frosted - so I'm thinking of getting regular cabinets and replacing the insets with glass at a local glass door company.

Am I crazy? Is it worth the trouble?

Please advice

We've started an Adel Med Brown and don't mind the birch insides... we can't see any birch from the outside except for underneath which will soon have plugmold and undercabinet lights and isn't an issue for us.

I have no idea on staining the frames but we've considered replacing the glass fronts we'll (eventually) have with different glass... it can be done after the fact very easily from what I've read. I'm not sure about getting full wood doors and cutting the centers out if that's what you mean. I think it's much simpler to buy the glass and then just replace the panels.

Hope that helps some... and welcome to the group

ukris03 --- Welcome to the Forums!

I so wish IKEA would come out with a dark cabinet box. Would solve this problem! There is a FAQ on replacing the Edgebanding, which is the part you see on the (surprise!) edges of the cabinet boxes. Fortunately, ADEL Medium Brown is one of the ones that we have matches for. So, you're not crazy...in fact, you're not even first.

Also, I'm not sure that it is so easy to replace the glass. I seem to recall a long conversation regarding this issue on the THS threads, and I believe that the conclusion was that the construction of the doors made it darn near impossible to remove the glass and replace it easily. But, you're welcome to try! We're nothing if not daredevils around here.

Again, welcome to the forums and we look forward to hearing more about your new kitchen!

Susan

Sorry, I think the boards were acting up yesterday - when I posted nobody had replied yet. But now I see three replies that were before mine and what I wrote doesn't make sense anymore.

I'm amazed at the support from the community. If I had any doubts I had about going with Ikea, it is soon being put to rest (but not quite).

I'll go to my local Ikea, and again take a look at the installation.

With regard to glass cabinets, I thought I could buy regular cabinets and replace by glass by following something along the lines as in this url:

http://www.hgtv.com/hgtv/rm_kitchen_...437527,00.html

Some one who is familiar with ikea cabinets told me this is not easy....Again I'll find out more whenI visit my local Ikea.

When I buy Ikea cabinets, will the staff help me with accessories/hardware that I'll need - such as hanging rail, molding, legs etc.

Talking of legs, I read somewhere that Ikea legs is not sturdy enough. If so, should I get legs from some other hardware store. I'm planning to go with granite countertops.

Thanks

See, I thought I had heard that replacing the glass was easy... but I haven't checked into it at all...

Regarding the legs, see this thread:

as well as this one

ukris03- please let us know what you find out about replaceing the glass. I want frosted glass (but no designs!). So , I would have to replace also. Didn't think it was going to be a problem.

Also, did anyone notice any gap between doors in 2 door cabinets? Was that an installation error, or is that part of frameless frame problem?

Incidentally, my earlier choice was Adel med. brown, but I'm now leaning towards ADEL Birch or Nexus Birch, due to the problems of the frames not matching. Im planning to havewine cabinets and wall glass cabinets for my island. With all the problems with edge banding and not having a brown frame, I think the frame color mismatch will look prominet. Alsowith the under cabinet light edging, at Ikea store the edging was not seemless on the cabinet. So I'm thinking of not havingunder cabinet lighting. I wish they atleast had plywood frame, then we could have stained it easily.

Am I being unfairly critical? Please help....
