1. The house is in a coastal area and is built on pilings. The floor in which in the kitchen is located is the second floor. The ground floor consists pf a parking pad and an enclosed entry way with mudroom, outdoor shower and enclosed stairs to the second floor. Those stairs run along the wall and open up approximately opposite the kitchen island.
2. As this is a vacation (and one day retirement) house, the need for masses of kitchen storage are minimal.
3. Regarding the dogs situation, the dog station in the kitchen would probably only be a watering station. They eat once a day and are both slobs so we'd handle that out of the mudroom. I like the watering station because they do share water and need access to it 24/7.
If a row of cabinets around the top of the kitchen seems superfluous, is it best to simply leave open space above the wall cabinets and the ceiling?
Again, thank you all so much. I think more headway has been made by you folks on this design then I've made in 6 months. Please keep your great ideas coming.
Regards,
Scott

Oh great! You have all the messes handled with your showers and mudroom! And since it's a vacation/retirement house, you don't have the PAPER problem!!
I love the suggestion of putting the microwave at the end of the island, near the fridge. Perhaps over the top of the dogs watering station so as to keep all the critters sequestered to one side of the room. Thank you!
Zeuss, I love the changes so far. A couple of things. First, the ceilings are 9 feet, so we'll probably go with tall cabinets. Second, regarding the pebble or tile backsplash, do you see that only on the wall with the cooktop or does it extend to the other wall as well. Does it wrap around the window and extend to the ceiling? What do you think of glass front wall cabinets? Do you think with the current configuration there's adequate storage space above the base cabinets? Is there a rule of thumb? Thanks so much to you and anyone else who adds their $.02

I was thinking about the stones just behind the stove/hood. I thought maybe the pass-through nature of the window would be emphasized by having it very close to counterdepth with maybe a matching granite shelf outside like an order window or bar. You could get a couple outdoor bar stools and you might have people hanging outside while talking to people inside.
So there wouldn't be a lot of room for backsplash on the window area. I love those pebbles but there can be too much of a good thing. I thought they represent the 'nature' aspect of your vacation home.
I don't know anything about the area you're building. From my geography lessons, it is a sandy area, isn't it? Does the water and sky look blue a lot? I have to ask because here in Vancouver, the water looks dark green with grey skies and lots of rocks.
So the blue mosaic was my attempt to bring the sea and sky into the space. I thought the blue and brown with tans would mimic your surroundsing. Help me out here, because I'm guessing.
Splatgirl is right. The glass front cabinets would give it a really sleek modern look. The rows of slab wood doors also give a modern look, but of a totally different kind. One is more midcentury modern and the other is more industrial modern. You need to let us know what direction you're leaning.
I think I we favor the glass. Though as we're building a duplex, we're ultimately talking about two kitchens. We could easily do one of each. Are there big price differences?
By moving the sink from the pass through area, that really opens it up and I like the idea of a transition area between the kitchen and outdoor eating area. There may not be enough room for bar stools, I'm not sure.
The house will be on an inlet between Chincoteague and Assategue Islands. It is caracterized more by darker water and lush green wetland vegetation than sand and turquoise sea.
I hope that better explains the setting.
I liked the suggestion of perhaps putting the microwave at the end of the kitchen island above the dog's station and near the refrigerator.
Any thoughts on what to do about the space between the high ceilings (9') and the tops of the refrigerator, oven and wall cabinets?
My wife LOVES the idea of the blue/green color scheme, but I want her to look at the pebbles as well.
Thanks again to everyone for focusing their creative talents on my project.
I guess I wouldn't necessarily want to put cabinetry all the way to the ceiling unless you feel strongly that there is an aesthetic reason to do so. As I said previously, unless you're trying to cram as much storage into the space as you possibly can, the choice to do full-height cabinets or not is COMPLETELY an aesthetic one. Keep in mind that with a modern theme, the trend rules (particularly the 'everyone does 42" uppers these days') don't necessarily apply to you, or at the very least you've got an better excuse for throwing those rules out the window...
Lining the entire height of the room with cabinetry will, IMO, make the room look smaller (cozier?), and emphasize the vertical. Modern interiors, generally speaking, tend to emphasize the horizontal.
I have ~9'6" ceilings in my kitchen so while I certainly could have extended the cabinetry up another whole layer, I much prefer the spaciousness having them NOT to the ceiling conveys vs. what IMO would be a more hemmed in feeling with masses of floor to ceiling cabinetry.
