A mutual friend suggested "Chris" get me to help him with his Ikea kitchen as he was having some trouble. Here is the info I have so far adn I'd really appreciate it if anyone could chime in with suggestions. I'll give the url of this thread to Chris to see if he'll join in with us.
Chris:
"The wall with the window has 173 inches.
The wall with the fridge has 94 inches and ends in a corridor.
The third wall is limited by a kind of a column which is 131 ninches from the corner with the window wall.
There is no fourth wall as the space is open to the living room.
Missing from the paper plan is an island which could be about 37 X 45 inches or so, whatever the Ikea island are.
Let me know what other information you need and how can we participate."
I haven't seen the kitchen in person, but I believe that it looks something like this below. The oven was in the corner and the big 36" cooktop was in the 48" island.
Here is another version of my first plan. The wall corner cabinets made using more 12" cabinets that I would like in order to get everything to fit. So this version uses the wall cabinet that wastes the far corner area, but allows for much bigger cabinets. That far corner is hard to reach anyway.
If Chris was to go with these 24" cabinets meeting at the corner, would you suggest 2 12" doors on each or 1 24" door? Normally I don't like the 24" door because it could hit you in the head, but when in the corner, 2 doors means you open 1 of them toward you, blocking your access to the cabinet.
I think I'd go with the 24" door, rather than the two 12's. Depending on how they open, you might even be able to open both cabinets at the same time that way.
The current arrangement wastes so much space with that angled oven - really disappointing.
Will go back and review the new sketch(es) and give additional feedback.
I'm not a big fan of where the 'fridge is. Too easy to clock someone with the door as they walk around the corner. But I don't see a better solution. Moving the oven there means the person coming around the corner walks into an open, hot oven door instead. Personally, I'd rather run into the fridge.
What are his goals
WRT
storage? Does he NEED all of those cabs in the corner by the cooktop? Might make for a more open feel without one or two of them.

That is what I was thinking - even if you did have to make sure you didn't hit yourself in the head.

I totally agree and the cooktop takes up almost the whole island with just 6" on each side! So there is no prep space next to the cooktop.
Unfortunately these kind of kitchens look impressive for buyers, but then when you try to cook in them, you find out how poor the design really is.

Geez - this is a violent design - crashing into fridge doors, hitting your head with 24" cabinet doors - what else can we come up with??
How 'bout the "let's test the spectators' pain threshold by deep frying these wonderful french fries while they sit only inches away" design to the island?
I like your idea of moving the cooktop, though the island then becomes "merely" a prep station, and it looks a bit "forced" for the room. Also, as I keep harping on for other designs, you'll want to ensure that the venting for your new hood can be properly installed - hate to see a forced redesign because of logistical issues.
I like the first design, and as you know I'm not a fan of island cooktops, especially where there is seating. I would much rather use the island for prep. The only change I'd make is to swap the location of the fridge and oven...putting the fridge closer to the micro and out of the cooking zone, and the oven closer to the cooktop, makes more sense to me.
Chris can't register for Ikeafans because he has a yahoo email. So here is what he said to me:
I like the idea of the cooktop in the corner. We have already bought a white 5 burner cooktop and we think it would look very nice in the corner. I was not able however to make this design in the ikea software because they had only one kind of corners, and I would need the mirror image of that element.
Oposite the cooktop corner, in the living room there will be a fireplace as focal point of the living room. What do you think of this concept? Would you like to visit us and have a look at the space in it's entirety?
He is talking about putting the cooktop on 30" or 36" base diagonally in the corner. How can that possibly work? It will take up so much room. I've emailed him to confirm that it is indeed a 36" cooktop.

Sorry Eva - I wasn't very clear. That second design I posted was meant to represent the kitchen he is replacing. And in this case you are so totally right!!! That small one-level island should never have had a cooktop put on it. That is really poor design.
But now he wants to do a variation on the old design. He wants the cooktop in the corner. If it is a 30" cooktop, I can see it working - how about you? But if it is indeed a 36", how will it work? I'm waiting for a answer on the size......
(What upper cabinet arrangement do you prefer? The diagonal corner cabinets with the 12" cabinets next to them, or the wasted space 24" cabinets meeting in the corner?)
