Hacking Cab Over Micro-Hood?

So I plan on 40" wall cabinets. Because of the small size of my kitchen I plan on using a microwave/fan combo over the range. I like having open space above the range though - so looking at how to raise the micro-hood higher. Has anyone shortened a 15" wall cab, or flipped a narrow 30 inch sideways, in order to add some more height between a range and micro-hood? Or skipped the cab and built a little top frame to position the micro low enough to use but higher than normal?

Re: Hacking Cab Over Micro-Hood?

folks have done that mod above the fridge

how much are you thinking? you actually have guidelines for how much clearance between the cooktop and the micro/fan.... that will guide quite a bit of the design.
i used one in my last kitchen with 39" cabs, my fan cab was 24 (almost positive on that, looks like it from the pic... don't live in the house anymore and i've done a coupld kitchens since then.) Use to store the blender and food processor up there too.

Re: Hacking Cab Over Micro-Hood?

I stated the question poorly initially (since edited it to clarify). I'm actually looking to lose cabinet space in favor of open space above the range. Nice adaptation to extend in your post though. I haven't dug the manufacturer's specs out of the boxed microwave yet.

I do know this. It's about 16" high - Yowza, just realized I'm having an idiot moment. Disregard question. The clearance was something I was worried about last week - when I was messing around with a 30" wall cab. This should be OK with the 40's.
