Hi,

I'm planning to have 39'' tall wall cabinet close to my base corner cabinet. However, I'm a little worried if I cannot reach to the cabinet well because it's a little too far to reach... ;(

If you were me, how would you modify this plan to have more reachable wall cainet? Since I have so many dishes, I don't want to give up many cabinet space, but it won't worth to install something I can't use much...

Please advise!!!!

Put it on the counter like a hutch. Picture to illustrate:

At only 4'10" I can reach even the top shelf of our cabinets that are on the counter.

One thing you might consider: instead of the 36", use two 18", with the second one's door mounted so as to be accessible from the other side of the peninsula. That is, both doors are hinged on the "sink-side" of the cabinet. Given the overhang, though, I'm not sure that is actually more accessible. You may just have to use that part of the cabinet for "once a year" items, and get out the step stool as needed.

BTW, as drawn, you can't open your refrigerator door. Unless you have it hinged on the left, which will make you crazy.

Or they have a French Door fridge!

I agree with the others, use it for rarely-accessed storage.

Thanks everyone for your advise! After reading all of your replies, I replaced 36'' cabinet with a 30'' & a 15''.

What do you think?

This way, I can access to 15'' cabinet from dining room side, and 30'' from kitchen side. I'm pretty tall, so I'm hoping I can access to the left part of 30'' cabinet. But if it didn't work out, I'll store once-a-year items there.

p.s. please ignore some cabinets under the counter on dining room side - I used them to see how the over-hang counter look like.

Thanks!!

The only potential problem I see with it is that now you have wall cabinets all the way to the edge of the cabinet overhang. If you plan on using that as an eating area, the person closest to the wall may have the edge of the 15" cabinet in his or her face. It depends on how long the peninsula is and how many people you think will be using it, though.

I'm still worried about the fridge...remember, you need to be able to open the fridge door past the 90 degree point in order to pull out drawers and/or shelves. If the side wall extends past the body of the fridge (probably ~24"), you'll need several inches of clearance beyond the width of the fridge. This may all be obvious, but it would really suck to figure it out after installation.

Thanks vmole. You are right, I should not have 15'' wall cabinet there...

As for frig door problem, I might adjust the wall depth as well as shifting all cabinets to the left a little more. The wall is currently a little less deep than my new kitchen plan. We are going to add little more depth to hide the fridge enouigh from the dining room (currently frig is 3-4 inches sticking out)

But I have been using the frig w/o opening the right drawer much so far (we will be taking down the wall where the peninsula will be for new kitchen), so it's not going to be a big problem for me just in case it doesn't open more than 90 degree...

Thanks again for your advise!
