Dimensions too tight? I have 118" and have designed cabinets for 117"

Hi All-

I am designing a kitchen with a fixed wall on either end. It's 118" wide and I can fit 117" cabinets and DW in. Here is what I have

Wall
__________
Dishwasher
36" sink cab
30" /4 drawer base cabinet
15" /3 drawer base cabinet
12" pull out pantry base cabinet
_________________
Wall

Is this too tight to have 1/2" in either end wiggle room?

Lynn

Measure the distance at the far back and at 26" from the back wall: make sure the outer edge is at least as wide as the inner edge You don't say what your door style is but if you'll need cover panels for the uppers around the short sink cab you might have to cut and install just where they show rather than full height.

If your dishwasher is against the wall, make sure there is nothing on that wall and you can open the door all the way. Ditto the pullout pantry.

Actually, I should have told you to measure as far as any drawers would pull out too--so add another 21" and measure again.

With so little wiggle room I'm sure you measured carefully ... but did you also measure at different heights? If your walls are not perfectly straight (which is quite common), it's not unusual to have different dimensions at floor level versus the ceiling and anywhere in the middle.

Don't forget that the cabinets are metric width. Normally, the difference isn't a big deal, but you've got fixed walls. The nominal 36" aren't 36" but something close. You can get the actual dimensions from the IKEA website, and you should add things up.

My understanding is that the North American kitchen cabinets are the exception to the Ikea-metric rule. This line is designed specifically for us and our imperial ways. So the inches match exactly to inches.

Re: Dimensions too tight? I have 118" and have designed cabinets for 117"

It looks like the fudging room is in the OP's favor: per the Ikea website, the 36" base is actually
Width: 35 7/8 "
Depth: 24 7/8 "
Height: 30 3/8 "

Width: 91 cm
Depth: 63 cm
Height: 77 cm

That fits with what I remember from when we had to leave room for our slide in range in our pennisula: we needed a tiny spacer on the dining room side so that there would be enough room on the kitchen side.
