We are planning on starting the
IKEA Direct
ordering process on Monday so I was hoping to have some of the experts look over our plan and point out any gotchas that we might have missed. We have a 6" panel floating in the middle just so we remember to order it because I'm sure we'll need it. Based on responses from our post yesterday, we're going to get a big panel and cut to fit as necessary across the back of the peninsula cabinets.
Some layout explanations: the right side of the kitchen has a short wall, just enough to tuck the fridge behind, and then it's open to the living room. The "bottom" of the kitchen is completely open to the dining room. We're planning on doing a black countertop and all our appliances are black.
Let me know if you need any more clarifications from me, or if you have any tips that we should consider before we go ahead with our order.
Thanks!

It looks pretty good, but a couple small things. I would suggest changing the side-by-side 15" and 18" to both be 3 drawer. It will look much better with the drawers matching and many people think the 3 drawer units are more useful.
Also, where is the stove ventilation? You'll need something to help maintain.your house air quality.
Oh! Good point on the 3 drawer, and that actually makes more sense considering how I want to use it...
And we do have a non-IKEA hood that goes over the stove - we just didn't put it on the plan because we only wanted things that we're going to order on there.
Have you actually slid your fridge tightly against a wall like that and checked to see if it would open? Even if it does open, will it open far enough without wall interference with the handle? We lived with this for years and it makes it hard to get bigger items in and out of the fridge, let alone take the trays and drawers out for cleaning.
Is the kitchen open beyond the cabinets in the foreground, or is that another wall and the door to the room in lower right?
In the photo at right, I would put the pullout unit in between the two large drawer units. They look kind of funny side by side like that.
Maybe do a corner cabinet on either side of the range hood. I still don't know if there's a wall left of the cooktop, but even if there was, it might look nice with a cover panel on the backside. If not a corner cabinet then maybe just a regular wall cabinet there with a cover panel on the left and right sides, and a corner cabinet with a 12" next to it on the right side of the range hood.
I'm not trying to rip on your design. I know it takes a crazy amount of time. I just went through the whole thing myself. When you're done with it, you will feel incredibly satisfied. Have patience. Houses are not anywhere near square, and making everything line up nice will consume most of your time. Trust me on that.
Sorry. If I would have read your first post better, I would have gotten a better idea of the room.
I'll get some pics of my AMB kitchen up as it's somewhat similar. I have a short peninsula.
Also, instead of another corner base cabinet to the left of the cooktop, have you considered a 24" cabinet facing out toward the living room? You could then have a small 12" base to the left of the cooktop, a small filler piece in the corner to allow room to open drawers or doors, and then another unit at the interior start to the peninsula. It's a slightly more efficient use of the corner space.
BigGar,
Thanks for all the input! Let me see if I can answer all your questions:
We haven't put the fridge in place yet (we are doing brand new construction), but the wall is very short, only ~36" at most. We might have to slide the fridge forward a little in order to get the door wide open, but I think we'll be able to accommodate it.
I guess that we're not really sure what to do with the upper cabinets on the left. We want those, but we don't want to completely fill in the stove wall with uppers to balance it. I'd love to see pics of your layout to see what you did.
And I really like the idea for the corner cabinets. Something that I never considered, but that would certainly give me much more usable cabinet space.
We'll play around with some of these suggestions and then post our revamped version.
I'll try to get some pics up, or at least figure out how to post my design from the planner for you. I think mine came out pretty nice so far, but I had 3 walls to work with and only a short peninsula.
