I wanted a white kitchen, kind of pottery barn style, white or off white cabinets, quartz countertop in cloud and white subway tile backsplash. Stainless steel appliances. I've tried to convince myself into liking the white IKEA cabinets, specifically, the lidingo cabinet. However, I just don't want MDF because it looks too shiny although several people here have stated that it doesn't. So, would a wood tone such as the kalsebo beech, or the adel medium brown work at all in a cottage style kitchen? My husband thinks, worst case, we can always paint the cabinets later. I really want to use IKEA for our cabinets and hate that I may not get the look I want. Thanks for any advice.
I will join the crowd in saying I don't think the Ikea white is too shiny. Maybe that's because I have it paired with beech counters, which tones things down? Maybe the difference is just institutional florescent lighting vs. warmer home lighting? Have you tried taking a piece home to see how it feels there? Check as-is first, but if no luck there, you can get an Applad drawer front very cheaply and the paint is the same. The paint is pretty smooth, but in a kitchen that's a very good thing because it's so easy to clean! I have NEVER had an easier time cleaning anything.
Also, if you want cottage, I'm not sure about white cabs with white counters & white tiles and then shiny stainless: that reads pretty cold and modern to me. What will you do with the wall paint?
But anyway, the wooden doors (apart from Nexus) all feel pretty traditional to me, so they can definitely work in a cottage setting and they'll warm it up considerably. Have you considered Fagerland? We're told there's a new Adel beech coming in the summer probably--any interest in that?
I really think beech and white are very different looks. take a look at some of the stunning Lindingo kitchens here, and I think you'll be blown away...
If you are close to IKEA, pick up a door. If not, order one off the site and use it to match your other elements.
Not sure why this says access denied- I can click on them and see them....so try anyway. If you can't see them, type in Lindingo in the search bar on this site and you will see them and more for yourself.
Maybe I should have posted a picture of the kind of kitchen I was referring to. I hope this link works Classic Palette - Design Assistant
Click on the small inset picture and you'll see the counters, backsplash and countertops. I do like the beech countertops mentioned but I'm afraid that with small children they won't hold up and will stain or get damaged. Thanks for your advice.
If you do decide you don't like the finish on the IKEA white doors and want to think about a natural wood door that will either grow on you or could be painted at a later point in time, my suggestions would be either Tidaholm or Adel birch--both of which seem more "cottagy" than either Kalsebo or Adel MB. The mitered corners and horizontal graining of Kalsebo just scream mid-century Danish modern to me for some reason (ok, it's not for "some reason"--it's because the furniture I grew up with in my parents house, which they still have, is actual Danish beech from the middle of the last century!). And while Adel MB is very versatile, it makes a much stronger color statement than Adel birch, which I think could produce a very cheery and breezy pale-on-pale color palate if paired with white everything else.
We just finished our "cottage style" kitchen. Well, we wanted more of a modern beachy feel without it being too "cottagey." We first wanted Lindingo, but thought they were a little too formal so we went with the Stat doors. Maybe a little more cottagey than we wanted but we're really happy with them. They are a little shiny, but not too bad. The great thing about Ikea cabinets is that for a minmal investment I can swap the doors to adel or lindingo later and not have to change anything else. You could buy 1 door of each and take them home. Or you could buy 1 door in the Adel birch and paint it and see how you like it.
By the way, I also wanted white subway tile, but my wife thought it would make the kitchen look like a hospital. So we found this glass subway beach tile. It was a lot more, but since our space isn't too big it was worth it. The cost of the Stat doors + the glass tile was cheaper than the Lindingo doors alone -- but overall the cost of Ikea cabinets is a bargain no matter what door!
