Planning Varde Hack

Folks seem interested in Varde (sorry no pictures yet!) so I thought I'd post about our plans. We are doing a full peninsula kitchen with the Varde line and some Udden. The corner base cabinet we set up tonight and decided the exposed side was real ugly. We are thinking of taking a Varde countertop, cutting it to fit and attaching it to the back of the cabinet so that it looks more finished. This will also create a dead space for the electrical for the hob to run. Then, and this is the fun part, we plan to take that extra raised up triangular counter piece that is supposed to float off the back and turn it into a table on casters that can fit flush with the counter in the cabinet or be rolled away to serve food, hold drinks at parties etc. If we can't figure out how to make that work, we will probably try to use the Perfekt six-bottle wine shelf with drawers to hold it up in a permanent place.

Re: Planning Varde Hack

Sounds cool - you could also use Perfekt birch cover panels on the backside...less weight to support.

Re: Planning Varde Hack

I'd be interested in seeing that...I'm considering Varde, Udden and/or Bravad for my new kitchen too. We are still in the planning stages though.
Sounds like you've got some great ideas there (I'm considering a peninsula or island type set-up too) and would love to see how it turns out.

Re: Planning Varde Hack

Here is a link to pictures of the kitchen in its preliminary stages. I'm hoping to get some better ones up so that you can see the scope of the kitchen, which has a cathedral ceiling with a skylight. In the first picture you are looking at a pantry that we just built under the stairs with a pass-through to the sink. Our deep freezer is in there so it will be a handy place to had things through for thawing. The peninsula that you see with a whole bunch of stuff on it is the Varde corner base and sink cabinet. We plan to use a Varde countertop to cover the ugly end of the corner cabinet. To the right you see a couple windows. In between them is a space 49 5/8 inches wide -- exactly the width of everything Udden! An appliance dock for small appliances will be on an Udden console there, with a dishwasher underneath next to the Udden drawer unit. Above we will have the Udden open shelves. The opening in the wall to the right of the pantry is a soon to be built broom closet - we are using a birch veneer Akurum door for that. Next to that will be a compact fridge and a wall-mounted oven (probably a simple convection/microwave since we don't need a full sized oven). The cooktop will go in the corner base cabinet. I will post more as we install stuff.
