It's my first post on this board, but I've been reading you for a couple of weeks now in my obsessive search of ideas for the perfect kitchen.
My boyfriend and I bought our first home, but there's no kitchen in there. I'm glad to have the opportunity to design it to my liking, but I also have to work with the tiles that are already there (a kind of terracota tile that I don't really like...). I'm affraid light cabinets will look too spanish with the floor... But on the other hand, the kitchen is a bit dark, and there is already dark wood beam and dark wood floor in the room next to the kitchen. I don't want the room to look too dark.
Do you have any idea of wich door style I should use to go with those tiles and look modern?
I've enclosed a picture of the kitchen and the tiles, it will surely help.
Re: Advice needed on color palette for a new kitchen
Hi and welcome!
My first question is why do you have to live with the tile? It is possible to remove tile, and it's even possible to go over it with an entirely different flooring, or possibly even stain the tiles darker if they are not sealed. So perhaps there are options there for you.
If not, then I'd probably recommend Adel White. Any of the wood tones will either go flat or more red against the tiles, I think, and that might not be a good thing. Terracotta brings out undertones of wood in sometimes unexpected ways.
So, Adel white, a cool-toned countertop like a gray, stainless appliances, metal pulls and a backsplash that combines warm and cool (maybe a turquoise and yellow, or a paler green with oranges) would give you a nice balance of warm to cool and stay lighter. Don't forget great lighting!
Re: Advice needed on color palette for a new kitchen
There's two reasons to keep the tiles (but probably even more to get rid of them):
1. Not create unnecessary waste, since they are new, and in perfect condition.
2. We'd like to save on money too...
Thanks a lot for your advice! I didn't knew that reddish tiles could reveal unexpected undertones in wood It's good to know...
Re: Advice needed on color palette for a new kitchen
what is the style of the house in general? do you have any exterior photos? other details that you plan to keep? I think the kitchen should work with the rest of your decor...
also, do you plan to stay here for a long time? what is your budget?
Re: Advice needed on color palette for a new kitchen
Our budget is 8k-10k (CAD), and we plan to stay there 5-10 years.
As for the style, it's an old house, with dark wood floors, wood beams (but not contry-ish, more industrial looking), crown molding. Our plan is to have an urban-lofty-modern (but young and fun) space, by mixing modern and vintage elements.
I don't know if it makes sense... english is not my first language, and I would have trouble explaining it even in french
Re: Advice needed on color palette for a new kitchen
I like EP's color scheme a lot. Also, as many people have suggested, you might get some doors you like and bring them home to look at in the space. One to try might be Adel birch because it is kind of yellow-y and it looks like the tiles sort of have some yellow mixed with red.
Re: Advice needed on color palette for a new kitchen
Thanks for the pic Blkymom. It helps visualize the results with a similar tile. There is a lot of choice in the light wood range, but they all have a different undertone. I like it with the Adel Birch. I think light cabinet is a wise idea, finally.
