-want it to be low enough for kids to reach it
-but counter space is a premium
-could put it in pantry, but only have one pantry
What do you think about using this high cabinet for the microwave and using a microwave built-in kit to trim around the mw? Would be lower for the kids, but not sitting on the counter. But would still lose that prime counter space...
The problem with the pantry is that I only have one pantry - the ones on the back wall (not sure you could see those from my drawing) are for cleaning supplies and as a bathroom cabinet. So my one pantry is the one to the left of the fridge. I'm not sure I want a microwave in there!
What do you think about this setup? Would I need a cover panel on the side of the high cabinet with the mw? I am swicthing to Adel white and I know it is a different white than the boxes...
Any new and interesting ideas or modification - especially with pictures - are welcomed!
I put mine in the base of my island - under the counter. Instead of using a regular base cabinet, I used a refrigerator cabinet. There are standard base cabinets on either side, so the counter top bridges over the micro. In my island, I have a 18" wide base cabinet, then a 30"
W
ref cabinet on legs, then my sink base. We put an outlet into the back of our island for the microwave and even switched it so that we can turn the micro off at counter level for when we DON'T want the kids turning the microwave on. In the ref cabinet below the microwave, I keep cookbooks and other misc. items that I don't use very often. Thanks!!
W definition
W is a wall cabinet designation, as in W18, can be a stand-in for Wide, or when followed by a / stands for With.
You have a tall cabinet on the right side of the fridge, just replace it with a base cabinet and put the thing on top of it. I think you already though of that, that way you don't have a independent appliance inside a built in cabinet.
knutter, that is a great idea, and yours looks just great! I really think that might work for me! how do you like it being at that level - do you mind the bending down? how very creative. I appreciate your feedback, and will see if I can find a way to do something similar. As long as my 6'5" husband will be able to get to it!
zenoforum and madp67 (from other thread) - thanks for your great feedback as well -- you guys are all so helpful! right now, if I don't put it under the counter, on the regular counter is my next choice. That does make more sense than trying to make a built-in fit, and still losing the counter space : )
I am putting my microwave in a pantry, with a lift-up door to cover it. Miele and Viking make similar lift-up doors, but I plan to make one using a Rubrik or Abstrakt door turned horizontally and ferrari hinges.
yankeelawyer - will your pantry also have regular pantry doors? how will this work with the rubrik door - will it be within the pantry? do you have any pictures?
Honestly, I don't use my micro for anything heavy duty - just some light warming up. I am only 5'-2" and my husband is 5'-11" - so it's not that big of a deal for us. However, most tall people I know are way more sensitive about being tall than I am about being short. (
ie
- they complain more about bending over than I do about needing a step-stool)
I would ask your husband and see how he feels. Thanks!

My pantry will have a cabinet with doors both above and below the microwave "cubby," if that makes sense. I have to look at the various modifications possible for the 88 inch pantry (Zeuss, I believe, posted a chart listing these; it is saved on this site somewhere). But, essentially, what I would like is, from bottom to top: cabinet with door hinged on left side with pullout drawers inside; cabinet with lift top door (for microwave or other appliance); cabinet with door hinged on left, probably with shelves inside.
I like the idea of a cubby with a lift door for the microwave because it gives the option of switching out the microwave for a cool coffee maker, or other appliance, or upgrading the microwave down the road. Note, however, that a 24-inch wide pantry like the one I am doing will be too small for a big microwave, which won't bother me but might bother some others.
