Question Help with cabinet size please...

Hello all. New to this site. I have been reading the posts here and got a lot of ideas. I am planning to redo my kitchen in Adel MB and have been working on the design for the past few days.

My kitchen height is 80". I would really like to get 39" upper cabinets, but that will not let me get the 18" required gap between the countertop and upper cabinets. Please tell me that I can do something better than 30" upper cabinets with a gap on the top.:(

Re: Help with cabinet size please...

Welcome to Ikeafans!

I don't see how 30" cabs yield a gap at the top. In fact, I'm not sure you even have room for 30" cabs, since 80" - 36" base and 30" wall cab = below standard 14" between counter and wall cab! Can you post your planner file? You may need to make some creative modifications to make things work well for you...

Re: Help with cabinet size please...

This is how my kitchen design looks so far, I have the 39 inch upper cabinets here but that will not be possible in reality, right?

Re: Help with cabinet size please...

Can you post the actual planner file please? As for whether the 39" cabs will work, the same math applies: 90 - (36 + 39) = 15", which is very marginal clearance. Another member, JimGo, came up with a creative solution which would give you three more inches to play with: he cut the 39" cabs down to just about 36", then installed a shallow drawer under a 30" door. If your sizes happened to fit you could stack 15" and 18" high cabs to get to 33" but most people would prefer flexibility in a tall cab to that solution.

Jimgo's cabinet idea was really cool, I thought. Definitely worth searching for his pics.

Re: Help with cabinet size please...

Does anyone have a link to Jimgo's post/photos of the mod mentioned above? I've searched and searched and can't find it. Thanks in advance.

Re: Help with cabinet size please...

Here is a link to Jimgo's blog which has photos of his kitchen:

IKEAFANS - JimGo's KitDin1/2Ba Fix

I think the concept of drawers at the base of upper cabs is cool. I saw another kitchen that had a series of small drawers there, maybe 5 or 6 inches wide each, that was also very cool.
