Mom's Kitchen - Planning Time

So it's time to plan for my mom's kitchen.

I've done a preliminary layout that I would like feedback on.

First, my mission statement.
I would like the kitchen to be contemporary, but light and functional.
I would like the kitchen on a real strict budget as it's a studio apartment and overimproving is not an option.
I would like it to function for mom as she ages. Right now she has back and knee problems so most if not all will be drawers.

I'm thinking Nexus Brown Black or a combination thereof. Like I said earlier, I just threw a layout out there because I must start somewhere. The dimensions are accurate as are the drain and gas hookup. As it is a building and we're on a budget, I'm not looking to move these around - extend them a bit if necessary, yes.

I would like to note that what I am planning to the left of the fridge is actually the stacylu broom closet possibly so that is why I've placed a 12" cabinet there.

The 24" inch pantry to the right of the fridge will house the microwave. I am not planning on installing a microhood. I don't really love microhoods and as mom ages, I would be nervous it would be too tall for her. As I type this now, it occurs to me that maybe I can place it on a wall cabinet above the dishwasher - maybe. ??

I will be using a 24" gas cooktop with a 24" Fagor electric oven (used by MiamiBeach).

I need to leave the office now, but I'll leave my plan in good hands. Have fun!

I've been blogged!
Re: Mom's Kitchen - Planning Time

I hope that with the window you'll get a nice amount of light...that's a lot of cabinetry in a dark finish. Could you possibly do the tall cover panels in Abstrakt White or Rubrik instead of the dark? That would bounce light around.

The small 12" cab next to the fridge is not going to be very useful, I'm afraid...unless you have a specific reason for it, I'd move it to the other side (by the table) or even use a 24" wide wall cab turned sideways to access more of the shelf space at the other end.

I'm also a bit worried about the clearance for the wall cabinets, espc. in the corner to the left of the range..make sure you can open the door fully.

Is this the only dining space? If not, perhaps doing a smaller table would allow you to increase the size of the fridge or the pantry.

Re: Mom's Kitchen - Planning Time

Eva, Thanks so much for your input!

I know, I'm not loving the way i laid it out. I really like the option of mixing it with white.

I also like the idea of turning a 24" sideways - that's a brilliant idea!!! i think that would be great.

With respect of the 12" to the left of the firdge, that's the spot I would like to build the Stacylu broom pullout that her DH built.

I envision having another dining area in the studio, so this would be a small table where mom and someone else sit for a quick bite - so yes, it can be smaller.

I'm going to have dinner right now so I'll continue playing in a bit.

Once again, thanks!

Re: Mom's Kitchen - Planning Time

I love the NBB, but I especially love it when used on the base cabs with white counters and white upper cabs. Would your mom like Abstrakt white on the upper cabs? The Abstrakt white is available in all sizes, with all options, also, so it is handy for design purposes. I also like the Rubrik white glass cabs (the designer Sarah Richardson used those for upper cabs in a kitchen and it was really pretty - -there was a post here somewhere with a link to pics).

Re: Mom's Kitchen - Planning Time

I like the combination also. I guess I'm going to have to venture to IKEA as I haven't been there in a bit.

Abstrakt is a bit more on the expensive side, but if used wisely I'm sure it wouldn't be a deal breaker.

I'll tinker more tomorrow as I'm calling it a night.

Thanks for your input.

Re: Mom's Kitchen - Planning Time

Your mom's space reminds me of another kitchen I saw and I was going to try to whip something up in the planner similar to what I saw and see if it works. I can't pull yours up since I have the old planner. Can you give me the dimensions?

Thanks,

Laurie

Re: Mom's Kitchen - Planning Time

I too had the 2007 planner until last week when I begrudgingly updated it.

Here are the dimensions Laurie - thanks for the stab.

9'2"L x 7'2" W . Ceiling height is 101"

The window is basically centered (26.5" on the left and 26.75" on the right). It's 64" H x 32.5W at 27.75 " from the floor.

The doorway is 29 7/8"W x 80"H. There are 30" to the left of it and 26.5" to the right of it.

The drain is located 42" from the right wall; hot water is at 31" and cold water at 27".

The gas hookup is located at 15.5" from left wall.

I've probably provided more info than you need and forgot something that you do need, so pls. let me know.

Re: Mom's Kitchen - Planning Time

I'm not sure how to post a pic . of the old planner here, but I can tell you what I put into the planner.

Of course, it's not ideal to have either the dishwasher or sink immediately when you walk-in, but we're not working with much space. I opted to put the sink immediately as you walk in instead of the dishwasher so you would have more continuous counterspace between the sink and stove. If you can't do that, then you can switch them and rearrange the wall cabinets. So here goes:

On the sink/stove wall from the doorway:

NBB Base Cabinets and white countertops:

Filler piece
24" sink
18" dishwasher
24" drawer base (if there had been only 1" more on this wall, we could have done a 30")
24" cooktop/oven
2 to 3" of filler/cover panel
15" roll out drawer base cabinet that's under extended countertop

Abstrakt White Wall Cabinets:

Filler piece
24" Wall Cabinet
12" Wall Cabinet
24" Wall Cabinet
Cover Panel
Hood over cooktop
Cover Panel
12" Wall Cabinet (that is over the extended countertop that is over the 15" roll-out base cabinet

Ok, I hoping you're following this. I know it's confusing.

Under the window wall, there would be a 15" deep countertop extending from over the roll-out cabinet with extended countertop over it, to the other wall, all under the window. 1, maybe 2 undercounter stools could be placed underneath and out of the way. This would give her eating space and extended countertop space next to the cooking area.

On the opposite wall from window wall:

Under the 15" deep extended countertop in that corner by the window would be:

15" cabinet (perhaps an open storage area for cookbooks, or a tucked away area for trash?)

resting on top of the extended countertop in that corner:

a tall cabinet, from countertop to ceiling (in that hidden corner) that could house a broom, etc., since her ceilings are so high. This would keep the high cabinet from being in they entry as you walk in and wouldn't feel so closed-in.

next to this 15" cabinet area:

88" High Pantry Cover Panel (Abstrakt White)
24" Wide x 88" High Pantry (Abstrakt White)
88" High Pantry Cover Panel (Abstrakt White)
24" Wide Refrigerator with 24" Wide Cabinet above
88" High Pantry Cover Panel (Abstrakt White)
30" Drawer Base Cabinet (NBB)
12" Base Cabinet (NBB)
Filler Piece

Above 30" and 12" base cabinets:

Either: 24" microwave cabinet and an 18" wall cabinet
OR:
30" microwave cabinet and a 12" wall cabinet

Filler piece

The vision is:

When you walk in the room, the seating is under the window. The base cabinets at the entry on both sides will open up the space a bit more. Not sure if I like the idea of the broom cabinet in the corner next to the eating area, but you could not do that and still put a 12" broom closet next to that
15" deep corner, THEN do all the other cabinets the same and just leave out the 12" base cabinet at the entry.

Whewwwwww!

Re: Mom's Kitchen - Planning Time

After going through that whole thing, I just paid better attention to all the info. you gave me and...........it's not going to work. Your window is below counter-height. Thus, the countertop can't extend under the window.

Ok, can you raise the window?

I think the question is "Can Chuck and/or Torrus raise the window?"
