The wife-lette and I got to go into Dallas yesterday and of course managed to get into Ikea-Frisco, my wife will spend hours in there looking about and I'll generally get to the cafeteria at least once and get some apple cake and coffee. Man I like their coffee!
Anyhow, after getting my fill of cake and coffee I had to make my way over the the kitchen section to answer a few questions I had come up with. While there a staff person gave me the impression that NYB was going to go away later this year. I've not heard this and another staffer disagreed. Anyhow, I left wondering who was correct. Have any of you with actual internal Ikea connections heard if NYB is going away soon? If so I'm going to chance it and buy my cabinets now, months ahead of the actual build.
Off topic side note:
The trip probably have saved me some more money too! My wife wants to get a few pieces of furniture before we build and move and I'm fine with that. Over in the sofa department I sat on a sectional I thought was lovely (looked minimal and mid-century) and really comfortable. Since I knew my wife was really wanting a $3300+ sofa at roomandboard.com I got her over there to the sectional and had her plop down, showed her the $1200 price and took some measurements it's called the the Karls.... something sofa and it will be a perfect fit and save some big $$$. Most importantly we got to try it before buying, which is something I was leary of when buying a piece of furniture online. I'm trying to find out now how big the 5 boxes are that this sectional comes in, got to see if we can get it home without a truck.
By the way YankeeLawyer and Torrus, you are correct the 18" drawer cabinet bases seem to be way more desirable than the 15". It's amazing what a difference the small increase in size makes in those units. I'm so glad I was able to find another way to handle my kitchen design and do away with the 15's.
Was it the Karlstad? I have that sofa and it is quite sturdy. It's a kind of modular system, in that you can get the sofa but if you decide later you want a chaise attached you take off the side piece and add the chaise piece.
You can get different legs for it, so take a look at the options that IKEA has for legs.
Also, it would be wise, even if you think you won't need it, to buy another set of slipcovers now, either the same as the one you've got or another look entirely. IKEA is rather infamous for discontinuing slipcovers quickly, and you won't know it until you need a new set a few years down the road and they are nowhere to be found.
Yeah that's it! It comes apart and can be made into several variations and the sales lady did say that you could buy other covers for it. She said the covers varied in price from about 125.00 to 330.00 depending on the material. The model we sat on was a sectional with about 9' long by 7.5' in dimension. We liked the brown and green colors and discussed actually combing the green and brown fabrics at the same time (my idea) to create a two color couch, my wife found some of the cushions in green and we put them on the brown sofa and the two looked great together. I think the blue and green might actually look quite fun in combination too.
I really liked this sofa's simple lines and it did seem pretty durable, but I don't know that for certain. I think we are going to get it so I hope it is durable and remains comfy. I really thought it was a good sofa to live with, it seemed really useful, comfortable, and very durable with a nice heavy weave fabric. Oh and great simple lines. It looked like a great place for me, my wife and all our little dogs to pile up on and watch TV!
Have you heard anything about the NYB cabinet fronts being short-lived?
Thanks,
B.S.

Reason: type
I don't have any information on the NYB per se other than the Woodbridge IKEA just set up a gorgeous and rather elaborate NYB display complete with a very cool island with a wrapped white counter (i.e., counter material as end cover panels as well as countertop). I would be surprised if they would go to that trouble if they thought it was being discontinued very soon, but if you are counting on NYB for your kitchen design I would ask a manager or something.
I am glad you saw the 18s .... I am *really* glad I swapped the 15 I originally had next to my range for an 18. The drawers on the 15 are only 11.5 inches wide inside, whereas those on the 18 are 14.5 inches wide ....a big difference if you want the option of putting plates or pots or whatnot in it.

this doesnt apply to the main topic, but my new favorite kitchen style is nyb with white wrapped counter. it has such a 60s mod feel to it, and looks really clean and crisp.

It looked hot. They had the island paired with a "wall of tall" all in NYB. They had the whole setup on a platform and it was a complete kitchen in a postage-stamp space. It was impressive.
I really think the salesperson who "thought" the NYB may be going away soon is wrong. Another staff guy said "he'd not heard that" and it seems to me that Ikea usually runs a door style a couple of years at a minimum. I've got to call the Frisco store tomorrow or Monday and ask about that sectional it's a go for us after looking at more furniture in Shreveport, LA today and seeing a nice (similar styled) looking but smaller sofa today for $3800...the $1200 price for the Karlstad is a steal. Anyhow, when I call to order the sofa I'm going to enquire more about the NYB. Ikea's site show's that the Frisco and Houston stores are both out of stock on that sofa, but i doubt it's correct. But if it's out I'll order it by phone and go pick it up when it's in. I don't know what I was thinking when I hoped I could pick it up without a truck. The site show's it to be in 5 boxes one of which is over 6' by 5.5' and weighs 240+lbs......I'll need a truck.
