I need help planning my backsplash for my new kitchen. Here's what parts of the design I have nailed down:
-Adel birch cabinets
-near-black countertops (either Paperstone obsidian or a very dark quartz)
-stainless appliances
The floors will most likely be linoleum, with the colors/pattern to match/complement the backsplash design.
I'm looking for a clean design. My house is a small 1928 bungalow and I want the kitchen to have a clean, streamlined (yet not hyper-modern) look. I am heavily leaning toward subway tile. I love the look of subway tile and how versatile it is, but I want to try to avoid just plain old white subway tile for the entire backsplash. I'd love either some sort of accent line or a simple mosaic.
Any suggestions? Or links to some sites with great subway tile designs?
You could do mostly plain with some glass pebble blocks- we loved these, but they didn't work with our counters, except for the beige, and we were going for something to downplay that. They are really expensive- like in the $20s for a 4"x12" strip, iirc, but that's at a mostly to the trade store, so you may be able to do better.
how 'bout a totally different direction ... I used slate for my backsplash - and I think it looks wonderful with the birch and black countertops (there are many varieties of slate ... some are much lighter - people generally think about the really dark slate when slate is mentioned). You can see photos in my gallery or blog.

Here's another idea for you that will fit the time period of your house. I need to retile my kitchen floors, and wanted to match the cute 1930s style unglazed 1" ceramic hexagon tile in the bathroom.
I've always loved these tiles -- and I just found them online by American Olean in unglazed ceramic porcelain. (I was originally looking in marble... oy!) Who knew they could be had for so cheap? Much cheaper than marble, and I like the uniform color (no grey vein to muck up the eye). I'm ordering samples now. I really hope they look as good as I think they will.
My samples arrived just today. Samples are $5 each. They come in a bunch of colors, in 12" x 24" sheets.
