Adel MB Design Ideas

I've been toying with paint colors, cabinets, floors, furniture, and everything in between in my kitchen since last June. I think I've ALMOST figured out what I want it to look like, and have spent almost every night for the last 3 months in the ikea planner, then making mockups in photoshop.

Currently, the kitchen is a 1951 galley kitchen, complete with a 20" stove and just 4 cabinets! 2 of them are 30x30 Askome Ash Glass cabinets, which I may keep as the two glass ones you see in the picture. I've had them since last October, and I'm set on getting all Ikea, but in Adel MB. I wanted a dark granite, so I went with Ubatuba. The flooring will most likely be Pergo Magnolia Laminate. Right now its carpet and light laminate. I plan to knock down the wall between the kitchen and the third bedroom currently used as a dining room. Many houses in my cookie cutter neighborhood have done the same. I like the green paint and we already have white appliances. I have been mixing up the furniture and appliances with black and white, and like the way they pop, but I'm not sure what to put as a backsplash, if there will be one at all.

Any thoughts or suggestions with what's been done so far? I'm still messing with the cabinet setup, so that's not set in stone.

Hi, I don't have any suggestions for you but I'd like to welcome you. I see you've been a member for many months and I'm glad you started posting. I moved your thread to kitchen planning in the hopes you'll get some more responses and ideas there.
Best wishes,

Re: Adel MB Design Ideas

A preliminary thought -- if you plan to have a cooktop over the built-in ovhave you allowed adequate clearance between the cooktop and the upper cabinets? Be sure to check the manufacturer's specs; usually the cabinets have to be set higher over a cooktop for fire safety. Also, I have a ton of pics of IKEA kitchens; if it would be helpful I can post some Adel MB ones for you for inspiration (and occasionally, consolation when you are post-demolition / pre-completion!).

Re: Adel MB Design Ideas

I've seen a lot of people set their cabinets higher than normal over cooktops, but I never thought it was about fire safety. I have cabinets over my stove now, set just like in the picture. I guess I'll have to figure out how to fix that. I was hoping to be able to use the two 30x30's I already have with glass fronts, but the only place they'll fit is over the stove.

Thanks for the suggestion! I've actually been lurking on here for a very, very long time before I even signed up. I've just enjoyed browsing so much I haven't bothered to post!

Re: Adel MB Design Ideas

I am trying to figure out if there is anyway to move that stove away from the door as well, but other than putting it on the island, I am not sure what other options there are, and it might be a shame to give up some of the island counterspace to a cooktop. What are the dimensions of the kitchen? Is it possible to use an island instead of the peninsula so that the oven could shift to the left and have its own oven wall?

Also, what about ventilation for the cooktop. With the current layout, one option would be to do 1 30x30 and 1 15 x 30 upper cab with glass doors, and an OTR (over the range) microwave with a built-in vent fan for the cooktop to save some space.

Also, are those white things 2 dishwashers or a washer / dryer (sorry, I can never remember all the IKEA symbols).

Re: Adel MB Design Ideas

The reason the oven is there is because there's already an exhaust fan built into the wall at that exact spot. Since it's a huge hole in the wall, and there's a door on the outside cut into the (asbestos) siding, I don't want to mess with it if I can help it. I was thinking originally to get two of those horizontal glass door cabinets with the steel edges on the rangewall, but since that wall will hold all of our dinnerware it wouldn't be enough storage.

Currently, the kitchen is a galley, and the stove is turned facing the washer and dryer (which are the two white things in the corner). It's a 864 sf ranch house, so there's not much I can do with the limited space! Since I've had to measure two separate rooms the best measurement I could get with a wall in between is 17' x 11'4". I'll remeasure when the wall is down to make sure there's less of a chance of screwups with fitting.

The return only has a sink, dishwasher, and two 12" pull out function drawers at the moment, and that will leave only enough walkway clearance from the kitchen to the dining room of the size of a doorway. I briefly thought about turning it into an island, but I would lose precious cabinet space, which is the huge reason I want to renovate. At the corner of the return, instead of a corner cabinet, I put a 24" drawer cabinet facing the dining room to hold the silverware, place settings, and cat food for quick easy access. Currently we have a hope chest holding all of our non refridgerated foods, place settings, and cat food. I'm tired of having a huge chest taking up so much room, so I figured that corner cabinet would be a good way to make ample use of the limited space in the dining room.

I tried uploading the planner document. I hope it worked!
