Hey everyone,
I went to Ikea yesterday and saw their Giman island solution. It gives the island that comtemporary bold look which I like a lot. Unfortunatly, it only comes with space for 2 30" drawer cabinets. My plan was to have 2 30" and one 18" cabinet along my island.
I am wondering if anyone has an idea to modify (extend) the Giman setup . May be I could keep the sides and create my own countertop. I just don't know how to find the finish white layer they put on it.
ALso, if anyone has a good tutorial to build that same kind of look, I could just build the island box to the size I need and buy ikea cabinets. Again, I am not sure how to finish the sides/corners, and the top.
Any idea, example, link would be greatly appreciated.
I think that you could use the IKEA butcherblock countertop to create the same look in the size of your choosing. Use whatever combination of carcasses you want to create the island, then use pieces of butcherblock countertop instead of coverpanels to cover the sides, and top it all off with the countertop of your choice with no overhang. This, in addition to the thickness of the material, is the key to the look.
Depending on the depth of your planned island, you will probably need to edge-join the butcherblock pieces to get the appropriate width for coverpanels. The easy way to accomplish this would be to rip off the slightly eased edges of the butcherblock pieces and butt them with some wood glue in the joint and let the fact that they are attached to the carcasses ensure they stay joined. The "proper" way, use a biscuit jointer, biscuits, glue and clamps just like a real woodworker would make a plank tabletop or whatever...
i'm going to second splat on this one. when the mods all met in
Seattle
last yr we sat around and looked at this piece, i was amazed at the material used to do the surround, it's not standard countertop material, i believe it was honeycomb or something like that (been almost a yr, sorry if i'm wrong, it happens ). i do recall
tigger
and i thinking it would be more difficult to modify. and i think it would be more cost effective to build on your own, 2 points to modifications
Hi,
We bought the Giman kitchen island yesterday, and want to put it together like the picture on the website, without the
akurum
cabinets underneath. We want to use it as an island/raised table. Does anyone know how to put Giman together so it's stable, without under cabinets. We're trying to get the attached look.
Thanks!!
Akurum definition
Akurum is the North American equivalent of FAKTUM; that is the fitted, frameless, component kitchen cabinet line, which when paired with door and drawer fronts as well as interior accessories makes up the full kitchen cabinet system.

The Giman is not intended to stand on its own. What may work for you, though, is to purchase 2 cabinet frames and attach the Giman pieces to those. They're basically cabinets
w
/o any shelves, drawers, etc.
eringavin: did you (or anyone else) ever manage to get the giman working as a freestanding table? that's exactly what we were planning to do today, until we opened the pack and realised it wasn't going to be as easy as we'd thought. it isn't an option for us to use cabinet frames as we need to be able to slide it over the top of another piece of furniture.
i'm actually really annoyed that the ikea advisor didn't warn us it wouldn't be suitable - we were pretty clear about not having anything underneath. we also saw the picture where it appears to be freestanding - very misleading!
which store were you able to find this in? I have one now in my current house and wanted to build a new one for the house I just bought (buyers really like it and since I'm moving 2,000 miles, i decided to let it go with the house). I was told that it's no longer available.
