I am usually a very decisive girl, but this kitchen has me second guessing everything.

Only thing that is "decided" are the counters. We will use Barre Grey on the perimeter "L" because it is a local product, relatively affordable, and we had it in our last kitchen and LOVE it. Island will be BB from Ikea.

Cabinets...Too many choices! I am absolutely in love with the abstrakt Red. Looks beautiful with the granite and the BB. But, the fingerprints are a problem. We currently have the abstrakt grey in a temporary kitchen, and although I like them, they do show every greasy hand and wet dog nose (not to mention the chicken pecks ) Also, DH is a tiny bit concerned about the wow factor. The red is bold (that doesn't bother me in the least).

Other choice is Nexus Birch. Also looks good with the granite and BB. My main concern is that it is not solid wood. Any feelings out there about the solid wood doors vs. the veneered? How do they hold up? I was at IKEA yesterday, and it seem to me that some of the doors were more beaten up than others (Hallerum for example).

And, I desperately want to see the Nexus brown/black!!!! When, oh when, will it arrive?

Here's my latest rambling thought...
Abstrakt Red on perimeter L with the granite counters (black and SS appliances)
Nexus Brown/black (if it ever appears) for the island with BB counters.

Thoughts? Inspiring ideas? Has anyone done a Red kitchen? I googled, but could only find examples from IKEA catalog.

I must say, I walk into the red demo kitchen at Ikea and it makes me smile...

Cindy - I love your idea of red with the black-brown on the island! I have a 5'-long glossy red range, and it makes me happy just to have that blast of color in the kitchen. Is DH persuade-able? Here are a couple red kitchens (European but not Ikea, unfortunately) I found by searching google images:

Try it the other way around. The more traditional (safer) and resaleable brown/black around the perimeter and the red in the island. I nice focal point. That would give you agreat wow, without being too overwhelming, plus the cheaper, easier option to change it later if it is a problem at resale. Plus, if fingerprints are a pain on the Abstrakt line, wouldn't you much rather wipe down a relatively small island, or the entire rest of your kitchen? Seems a no brainer to me.

I'm doing something similar in fact. I am going with Hallarum on the outside and an Abstrakt black island for all the reasons I just described.

DH is totally persuadable. Thank you for the support!

I'm not worried about resale at all--we're building on the family farm (many generations in the family), so although I know to never say never, we never plan to sell.

many thanks for the images of the red kitchens--they are beautiful and really push me to the red. I'll show them to DH as the final sell job!

I finally figured out how to post my plans!

I used abstrakt black on the island since they don't have the nexus brown/black yet.

Island will have overhang--can't figure out how to do it in the planner.

Any feedback on solid wood vs. veneer?

Solid vs. veneer: Any damage severe enough to go all the way through the veneer is going to put a pretty big gash in your solid wood door anyway. Unless you're actually prepared to sand down and refinish such a gash, rather than buy a new door, there's no real difference there. OTOH, particle board is more dimensionally stable than solid wood (warping and such). I guess potentially the veneer could peel off, but that would be pretty serious manufacturing defect, given modern adhesives.

Comparing wear levels in the Ikea example kitchens is risky; you don't know how long each has been there. Besides, people treat those kitchens in ways you'd never dream of doing.

Hi CindyLouWho:

To show your overhang on the planner, under Akurum: click on Worktop Solutions, then Worktop Extension and then click on countertop and drag where you want it. I find it works better in the 'floor layout' view vs. the 3D view. Hold the Ctrl button when you drag it. Hope that helps.

Love your kitchen, CindyLouWho! How lucky to have all those windows, and all that counter space ... I love the contrasting black/red. Good luck and enjoy!

Many thanks all!

Yes, I am lucky to have the windows. We're building, and one of my priorities was to be able to see everything from the kitchen.

Only problem is that Abstrakt Black is discontinued. As I mentioned earlier, I plan to use it for an island in my kitchen as well (but with Hallarum or Nexus brown/black around the perimeter) and I bought out the last stocks of it at my Ikea (Sacramento) with no options available to order more. Basically, if you don't already have it in hand, its too late unfortunately...
