Hi everyone. I would really appreciate some help in this design......
We are in the planning stages of a remodel. Here is the first IKEA draft with the walls moved and window added (the one on the L). The space is 20x26.
We want the peninsula to make a turn..... and have the island mirror the angle to a bar height with 2 seats. The peninsula will have an overhang for seating for 3...
I don't know how to use the planner to the fullest when it comes to building the angles and island.
The doorway next to the pantry will enter from the laundry so the island will be the grocery bag landing area with food storage in the upper cabs next to the frig and the island. We want a pull out garbage in the island across from the sink.
I've been hovering around here and in the THS forums so give me some advice. It is greatly appreciated!
We have recently bought the house and will begin demo 1/2006 so this is my time to get all the ducks in a row for a smooth remodel project! (If that is possible)
Just my two cents...first, it is a very nice, spacious kitchen and the layout looks good. The only thing I see that you might want to change is the fridge is pretty far away from the sink and range, in an ideal world I'd put it where you have the two horizontal cabinets on the sink side wall instead, and then turn the wall where the fridge is currently into a long countertop area with a pantry at the end and cabinets above or even floor to ceiling cabinets since you've got a nice long run of countertop at the peninsula already.
It would be nice to angle the table to match the angle of the peninsula, and that might improve traffic flow. It looks a little tight at that corner.
Great design, nice space. Is this Adel in brown? I like the different color countertops.
I think evap's onto something about moving the refridgerarto and angling the table. I'm also wondering about the table and the left side of the room. I love the buffet you have in the picture, but it looks like it might be a little out of place alone on that wall and not really next to the table.
Whats on the "bottom" of the view you show--is it a wall or is the room open to the rest of the house? And those nice windows on the left--is that a view you want to take advantage of, either for people sitting and eating or for someone in the kitchen's main work area?
Thanks for the input. The dishwasher is right next to the sink so I don't think I could get the frig over there. It will bejust under 8 feet away, is that too far?
We are trying to keep the appliances movement to a minimum to save $$. There won't be any on the island for that reason.
Also, is it possible to make an angled peninsula with the IKEA cabinets? I rotatedthe cab 45 degrees to get it where it is but I don't want to go this route if it's not possible to have a nice outcome. Would a panel cover the empty space?
I'm new at this so forgive me if my questions seem elementary.
nyc- there are 5 fixed glass windows (34x76) with views to the golfcourse beyond the backyard. The big "door" is a 6ft slider out to the deck. What I didnt put in is the 48" opening to the living room just next to the slider.
We arent sure what size table we'll get eventually, I just chose the buffet and table from the kitchen design program to see what it would look like. I have envisioned a bench seating (not built in but a real bench) on the window side of the table to take advantage of the outside views. I do worry about the space being too elongated for the dining table orientation. Any ideas?
The rule of thumb is that each leg of the work triangle formed by the range, sink and fridge should be 4-9 feet. So 8 ft is at the outer limit, and you might find that it is a trek after a while.
Moving the fridge, even if you have to run a water line for the icemaker, is relatively inexpensive, probably the least expensive appliance to move. If you don't have an icemaker it is a no-cost move, since you simply need access to an outlet.
How about a round table in that area, that can be opened to a larger one if needed?
Have you considered a counter-height table in the corner instead of the hutch? That would give you a couple extra seats to pull up to the peninsula if needed, and a nice breakfast area or secondary seating area for meals. Unless you need the extra storage of a hutch, a table would give you more functionality.
You can certainly use a cover panel for the corner, but check out the PERFEKT line of corner shelving units. They match the AKURUM cabinets and would give you a nice effect for the angled corner. Or you could make pie-wedge shelves from a cover panel and attach them in the angled area, or put a nice decorative floor urn in there.
Any suggestions on where would we put the dishwasher? I'm not opposed to movement as long as we can get it done without major expense.
Thanks for the furniture ideas, we have flexibility since we don't have any existing furniture to work into the design... (we got rid of everything when we moved so we are starting from scratch) so we can consider any options.
I can't get the Perfekt on the 2006 kitchen planner. Anyone else having trouble with it? It seems like many components won't come up. UGGGH!
Is there a need to move the dishwasher? It looks like you have room where your 4-drawer cabinet is next to the dishwasher to put the fridge there instead. Instead of the corner cabinet and all that, put the fridge and maybe a tall pantry along that wall, then have the wall of cabinets all along where the fridge is. Yould have to leave a bit of room to open the tall pantry if you did that, but that would be fine.
Oy. I don't think I've gotten all the Perfekt shelves up yet. Too many things to do....:? Up until just recently, I don't even think they were pictured on the US IKEA site, but I think they are now.
I have some other thoughts on your plan, but I need a little time to assimilate and write it up. I'll try to put some time in on it this afternoon. Looking good, though!
Susan
