Hi, all--
Very
new to this site
but since I decided to remodel my kitchen, I've become just a tad obsessed. I wanted some input on my small kitchen. I like the Ikea cabs because they look great and costs seem about 1/2 the cost of Kraftmaid cabs from the bigbox stores. (Is the kitchen list on the planner accurate?)
My budget is limited partly because we are likely to move from this house in 2-3 yrs, but I just can't stand my crappy kitchen anymore and I think it will help the resale on our house anyway. We are a family of five (7 yr old and 18 mo twins) in a 1905 house. The kitchen is usu pretty dark and I plan to put in recessed lighting above and undercab lighting.
The two layouts I'm attaching:
layout1 has the current footprint of the room except for a window that is currently behind the fridge (see what I mean by crappy kitchen). With that layout, I plan to cover up the window. The long wall without windows or doors currently has hot water baseboard that I will get rid of and replace with a toe kick heater.
The doors go out so I don't have to worry about their clearance. I'm thinking open shelving above the shallow cabs in the corner. The blind corner by the sink I plan to do the Lee Valley pullout which I think is so cool.
There is a soffit in the whole L corner above the sink, etc. that I plan to shorten to fit 39" cabs but there's no soffit on the opposite corner.
I'm thinking it looks a little tight by the back door corner (back door is one that is on the same wall as window by sink).
layout2 keeps all the windows and doors but moves the gas line (which I think would be cheaper labor wise). L by sink is essentially unchanged from layout1. I'm leaning toward this one but I don't know if it looks too crowded. Again, open shelving above the shallow cab in the corner by the door. I don't know quite what I'll do for the back corner by the fridge.
I put the countertops in just because I wanted to see how it would look but I'll probably go with either laminate with tile backplash and silgranit sink or go ridiculous and splurge on engineered stone. (Prob the former) I'm redoing floors but I keep flipfloping between cork, bamboo, marmoleum, and hardwood.
I'm at the early stages so I'd love input.
