Yes! Be careful. I have this exact arrangement and had to recess my dishwasher...the dishwasher I have extends a bit at the top where the controls are. Maybe it wouldn't be as much of a concern with a dishwasher with hidden control panels...I don't know. But now I have to make sure my dishwasher is fully closed and latched before I open my 36" drawer base cabinet that is perpendicular to it. I could have avoided the problem with a few inches of filler ( I put filler to the right of the dishwasher as in your plan...but forgot to put some after I turned the corner before the next cabinet.) No one (me, planner,Ikean, contractor)caught this in my plan either. Now I don't like the way my dishwasher looks...because it is recessed more than usual, I can see the side of the adjacent cabinet and the edge of the filler to the right of it. I am attaching a pic.
It probably will hit it. Dishwashers with controls on frony usually stick out an inch or two. If you've decided on which diswasher model, see how far it sticks out past the cabinet edge. I had the same problem with a range.
If you are using the 49" blind corner cabinet you should be OK - the drawer is 21" wide which means it starts 28" from the corner - as long as the DW dosn't protrude more than 1.5" past the front of the countertop (25.5"). You can also bump out the corner cabinet a bit to give more clearance.
Kathy - Regarding our discussion about your 36" base unit used for a corner unit:
This picture showsthe configuration I would have in one of my designs where I was going to use the 36" door base cabinet for the corner (pulled out from wall) with an 18" door (to use with the Lee Valley unit).
Do you think this will be a problem? (my dishwasher would be in same location as picture)
Laurie - I think in that case you might want to use the 15" door with a few inches of filler right in the corner. Remember that the LV unit requires a door that pulls straight out, so you don't just have to factor in the arch of the swing. The pullout really has to clear the dishwasher completely. The only way to know for sure is to measure how far the DW extends from the face of the cabinet box, and add enough filler to account for that.
I had that exact problem when I moved into this house. The builder "fixed" it by cutting down an already narrow drawer and door opening, making a bad corner cabinet even worse. If I were staying here, I'd have a couple of Lee Valley units in a heartbeat.
Kathy - tell me if I have figured this correctly: For the 36" base in a corner, I would have to pull it out from the wall about 6" usually to get a 15" door in there. But, I will need to pull it out a few additionalinches to clear the Dishwasher. I guess it depends on how much farther, because then I'm getting close to the 49" corner cabinet size anyway. Hopefully it's just 3" or so. That would only save me 3" doing the 36". When the time comes, I'll measure.
Laurie - I think you've got it. At some point, the Ikea blind corner might make the most sense. You still might consider using the LV unit inside, though, since you don't have to buy the Ikea innards.
I'll paste what I just told Liz on the Blind Corner thread: The crucial calculation is to measure from the front corner - it doesn't really matter how far from the wall you are as long as you have enough filler to allow the pullout door to clear the perpendicular surface, which has to include drawer fronts and pulls [or in your case, the dw].
Another factor to consider is whether you can tolerate the front edge of the cabinet carcass showing next to the door. If you look closely at my pictures, you'll see that the left edge adjacent to the door looks like filler - but it's really the cabinet box. That's because you need every bit of a 15" door to cover the attached shelf. If you used a 16" or larger door, you'd be able to have it overlap on the left side.
If I have to use too much space with the 36" to clear the DW, then I'll just go with the 49". I'll lose a drawer base on that peninsula.
I know this is going off topic here, but actually I'm liking another floor plan alot more, but my dh doesn't because it requires relocating the plumbing approximately 8 ft. But, it would give me a larger run of countertop which I really like.I'm working on him!! We don't have alot of sunlight in our house and if we did this plan, we could have 16 ft. of patio doors across the back of the house. It's the north side and a sunroom is built to the back of the house by the kitchen and living room and it blocks all the sun.
It's basically a patio with an enclosure (6 sliding glass doors) (16ft. x 21 ft).
Do you think it would look bad having 16 ft. of patio doors looking out into this space?
We have wicker styles furniture and plants in there. I'm wanting to put some type of finish to the concrete out there so it doesn't look like it's just concrete. More like extra largetile. Kinda like Jill77's kitchen in the Before and Afters (same kinda layout) with the U-shaped kitchen open to the patio doors. But, ours is a sunroom instead of just patio. Not sure if this will look bad or "cluttered" to the eye. I like things minimalistic so I don't want it to look "busy".
