what fits in drawer cabs & configuration of peninsula
I was hoping to remove the wall between the dining room and kitchen but we were advised not to. I'm working with a limited amount of space so I need to maximize every inch. I have a galley kitchen; along one wall I have the range and frig. Along this wall I only have space for a corner cab and 12" pullout. I would like to have drawers on the other wall. Again due to space issues I am only able to have either two 18" cabs or one 18" & one 15" (size of sink cab will determine which option). This brings me to my first question. What will actually fit in these drawers? I don't want to end up with a lot of drawers that only fit linens, flatware and serving utensils.
Now for my second question; I am hoping to gain counter space and hopefully more storage by adding a peninsula. My idea is to turn a 24" cabinet so it is facing away from the kitchen with a 4" filler alongside the wall. Then I would add a 30" drawer cabinet facing into the kitchen. The filler is intended to allow the two adjacent drawer cabinet handles to clear each other. Is this possible? If so, would it look odd?
Re: what fits in drawer cabs & configuration of peninsula
Not only is it possible, it has been done - I just cannot remember whose kitchens it has been in. I am not visualizing the filler well, but that can be adjusted to each kitchen.
Check the list of similar threads at the bottom of this page or do a search for "peninsula" and see if any of those have discussions or pictures of similar setups.
Re: what fits in drawer cabs & configuration of peninsula
If you take a look at my kitchen pics, you'll see I have an 18" cabinet flanking my range. The left one is used is used for my everday pots and the right one for my lesser used pots. These two cabinets are the only ones I use for pots and I'm truly OK with these. I do not need additional space.
The 30" cabinet I do have, I use for party platters and small appliances.
So, yes. The 18" cabinets are user friendly. They are NOT a waste of space.
Re: what fits in drawer cabs & configuration of peninsula
I completely missed your first question!
IKEA drawers come in three depths - 6.25", 11.25" and 12.5" - though actually those depths are the decorative fronts and the actual interior height is about 2" less.
The standard configuration for drawer cabinets is one of each of those sizes. For some cabinet widths, you can get three 6.25" drawers and one 11.25" drawer, but for storage next to a stove, that would not be good.
As madp67 says, you can store a lot in those drawers - and really load them up since they can handle a lot of weight.

This is a great thread - I am starting to second guess my layout as i have two 15" cabinet with the three drawers planned on either side of my oven -I know you mentioned the 18" are user friendly - what are your thoughts on the 15"?
I too have a limited space - joys of a small house.

Re: what fits in drawer cabs & configuration of peninsula
At least you have a house.
I also have a 15" cabinet in my kitchen - to the right of the sink. Here I keep my prep bowls, grater, knives (in the top drawer) and other miscellaneous stuff. It would have been an issue (for me) to store my pots there due to the long handles of some of the ones I own. You wouldn't think 3" makes that much of a difference but it really does.
What are you planning on storing in your 15" cabs?
Re: what fits in drawer cabs & configuration of peninsula
In one I was going to put baking supplies - bowls / measuring cups / spatulas / spices, hand mixer and all that kinda stuff.
In the second one was going to try and find a container to fit in the bottom drawer to hold dog food - and then in the others - boxes of baggies / tin foils / wax paper rolls etc.
I have planned a base corner cab to hold all of my pots and blender etc
Do you think that will work?
By the way - love your kitchen - and adore the table you created - how ingenious!!

Hi - sorry I kind of hijacked your post / thread.
With regards to your second question - can you upload a planner file of your space so we can visualize it - I need to be able to see it - far too much of a visual person thanks

Deb, thanks! You're sweet as usual.
I believe the 15" cabinets will work for what you're intending. I keep my saran wrap, aluminum foil, baggies and small trash can liners in one of the deep drawers of the 15" high cabinet (to the right of the fridge). It works beautifully. Maybe when I get home tonight I should take pics of the contents of my drawers for you to see what I have. It can give you an idea of what it can hold.

I would really appreciate and that - thank you for the offer - and I am sure crg2mls the original poster of this thread would like to see them as well.
