I need to build an island. It really can't be much longer than 48" or so and 30" wide wide.

I have two old (new) cabinets left over from my kitchen remodel at my old house that I really should use. they are 15" by whatever counter depth is. I also want some bookshelves at one end(s). And I want the main cabinet tohave big drawers.

But I can't for the life of me figure out how to do this. Help. Excuse the wierd writing, my computer is misbehaving. And it is a part of the problem tocorrect my errors.

Wrote this once and my baaadly behaving computer ate it somehow. I can't fix typos so be tolerant.

I want to build an island of Ikea cabinets. I have two old 15" base cabs left over from a previous remodel that I probably should use.

The island can't be deeper than 30" and longer than +/- 48". I want a base cab with big drawers. And some kind of bookshelf for a few of my many cookbooks (or not).

So how do I make this happen? I seem to be totally incapable of designingthis. Somekindof brain decompensation I guess. Or is that decomposing? LOL

Opps, it didn't get eaten. I posted twice. Definitely a lack of brain.

hamptonmeadow, I'll delete the other one for you. No worries! Is it a browser problem you are having? Firefox and IE seem to be the best for this forum software. I know it has problems with Safari (no returns, lack of features), and even in Firefox there's some limited functionality (no link icon, no spellcheck).

Just let me know -- sorry you're having problems!

I can't get the darn planner to work for me, so I can't post any pictures. But the easiest plan would be to have the two 15" cabinets side by side, then a 30" drawer stack back-to-back with the 15" cabinets. This would use both your existing cabinets and create an island 30x48".

If you're willing to only use one cabinet, that'll obviously give you more options to get your big drawers.

It would be helpful if you could either post a sketch of your kitchen layout or describe it in words. That way we can tell what direction the doors/drawers should open without interfering with the rest of the kitchen. Also, what door style are you using? Any chance it's one where you could leave one of your existing cabinets doorless as open storage for cookbooks, etc.?

I can see a few options in that size range, but 30" deep isn't among them. Since base cabinets are 24" deep, you could use a row of bases for a 25" deep island, or extend the counter over one edge to create a breakfast bar. You need about 12" overhang, though, so that puts you at 37" or so. (I think Ikea makes an island countertop that's 39" deep, so that means it's a standard size for an island). If you don't want a bar, you could put the 12" deep wall cabinets back to back with the base cabinets, or you could probably use some billy bookcases in the same way for open shelving all the way across the longer edge of the island.

For the base configuration, if you're limited to 48" the 2 15" drawer bases you want to use take a big chunk out of that - leaving space to have an 18" drawer base (assuming the ones you have already are Ikea and will line up with a new set of Ikea drawers). The narrowest of the really big drawer bases is 30" wide, which would leave you with 28" to play with. You might consider a 36" drawer base plus a 12" base pullout.

hamptonmeadow, my apologies....I got busy last night and failed to delete the other topic. kmcg replied to you there, so I didn't want to delete that one. What I've done is to merge the two topics together so that all your responses are in one place.

Hopefully, that's not discombobulating!

I think I willdump the two 15" andtry to do a 30 wide island or so.

My kitchen is L shaped. The fridge and cooktop are on the short side of the l. The long side has the sink and single built in oven. The roomis 17 by 12 I think , thusis not quite wide enough. Unfortunately we were forced to gowith the builder's cabinets. Framed and useless. I would like to have theisland for pots and pans

since the area under my cook top is pretty pathetic. Just shelves.

So One 36 inch wide 15" deep with glass doors and shelves. Then another 15" deep

36 with drawers and a long drawer across the top?

Does that make sense? I could add on two more 15's to add length.

Opps no 15's in Ikea? Just 24's and 12's. So instead of a 36 15 I could do a 12 36 with doors. And then a 24 for the backside of the island and add on the end two.

Does that sound like something useful?

Any design improvments to suggest? The end two could be a 12 x ? to make the

length, plus a 24 x for more drawers.
