After talking to lots of electricians and plumbers, the constraints of being in a 1920's building have become a bit clearer. As a result, one wall, my sink wall, is pretty much staying as it is now (but I might still post questions about it later!)
This is the stove wall. I think it works. If it went in like this today, I'm sure it would be fine. But I need to figure out some of the details, and I wonder if it could be just a bit better.
Oh, the door's coming in from the right, and the pantry and fridge cabs are counter depth, of course.
- The trash pullouts at the right... I had originally wanted them to just be 12" each because I think that's all I need. But is 12" too tight for trash/recycling pullouts? If so, that makes my next question moot.
- If I go 24" (12" x 2) on the pullouts, it would also be better because my microwave is only 22" wide, so it could fit on a 24" micro shelf. But it looks like there isn't a 24" x 15" wall cab, and maybe that wouldn't be as much of a usable space anyway? If cutting everything by 6" works, I'd make the cabinets between the pantry and the range 36", which would redistribute counter space and move the range closer to the sink on the other wall. And would it just look too weird to have the smaller pullouts and keep the wall cabs as they are in the plan (make the drawers to the right of the range 36")?

- Cover panels. Where do they go in this plan? Are they just decorative or structural as well? If I come up with all the possible places, I get: between the pantry and wall, right side of pantry (just from counter or to the floor?), either side of vent, either side of range, maybe attaching to the right wall. Which of those are necessary, extraneous, or at discretion?
- I'm sure there are people who've done the 30" single drawer, I think I've read about it here. Does it feel just right or too long? I've seen 36" single drawers and they feel unwieldy to me.
- One thought I had was making the 12"D 15"W cabinets at the ceiling into horizontals (white doors, not glass). Thoughts? There's actually 3" of space between the top cabs and the ceiling, but I didn't bother with that level of detail in the planner.
Think that's all for now. Thanks!

Anyone? I'm hoping to actually order by this weekend(!), so really, any input on any of the questions would be greatly appreciated. I've been playing around with some of the variations in the planner, just to get a visual on the differences. Here's one with horizontals (I tried glass after all. Guess I'm not so decided). I'll post more images tomorrow, and maybe my growing spreadsheet of parts for the order once that's more fleshed out. Thanks!
Hi there! I'm sorry that you haven't been getting much a response - I think that people are busy this week since the level of activity is a bit lower than normal.
Your plan looks really beautiful so far!
In response to your questions, I think that there is some problem with the horizontal cabinets not being exactly the same width as the wall cabinets. If you have some fudge room it might be okay. That said, I personally like the look of the cabinets as you have them, it'll be a really pretty stretch of doors and handles!
I actually really like your combo of all 15" and 30" cabinets on the stove wall. It has a very nice symmetry and I think that the other plans for moving things around would detract from that. I bet that you'll find that you can get recycling AND trash in one of the 15" pullouts, leaving the other for oil, vinegar, whatever. In fact, it might look nice to switch them with the 30" drawer so that it is flanked by two pullouts. Also, having a little extra space for the microwave is probably nice - it's a good place to store cookbooks!
Space at top: What about dividing that space up between the top and bottom of the upper cabs, so that you have two long linear bands of some sort of filler? You seem to have a stainless theme - I'm imagining a long shiny stainless strip or even a black one framing that long stretch of uppers.
Cover panels:
pantry-wall: just need to be wide enough that the door can open. Doesn't have to cover whole pantry side, just the visible part.
pantry-right: Just aesthetic, although it will also help cover any potential gap between the wall and cabinet. You can just do the counter to wall or go from the floor to the ceiling.
range: You can probably skip these.
range hood: decorative, but you'd only need a fraction of one on each side.
Right wall: You'd need something if there is any door trim or if your upper cab doors will need space so that they can open fully.
After reading the forum with the width of the horizontals in mind, I'm going to keep them regular cabinets. 1/8" x 4 is more than I really want to deal with, even though it seems so small. I also had the realization that the doors up there will be 15" x 15" square, which I think will look regular and thus not really be seen (plus they're pretty high up)
I really like your idea of moving one of the pullouts to be for oils! I had thought about that in the very beginning but had let it drop by the wayside.
And the filler suggestion--I'm intrigued. Do you have any idea what I would need to implement that? Would it need to be solid so the top cabinets sit on it... like a cover panel? I am having a stainless theme, and I'd thought about doing the aluminum decor strip I saw somewhere here, but rejected it on the grounds that it would look out of place. But with the filler strip matching, it would be a good tie-in, I think. And thanks for the input on the cover panels. Very helpful.
New issue! I was looking again at the plan, and I'm wondering now about the microwave cabinet. Presumably the deco strip doesn't go under it, since it sticks out. So should I forgo the undercab lighting there, or put it in regardless of the different depth? Neither seems right to me.
The upper row of cabs will have it's own rail system, so any filler between the rows doesn't have to be structural. You'd have to think about whether you wanted it flush with the doors or with the cabinet boxes, I suppose.
I see your problem with the deco strip/microwave cab. If you aren't doing under cab lighting, or if you are using a puck light that is attractive, I might forego the deco strip completely. If you do use the rail, or put in whatever trim you use at the top of the cabinets, I bet that you could just run it straight across the bottom and ignore the bumpout for the microwave. The microwave itself will be sticking out on that and I don't think that the shelf issue will be noticeable.
I don't have any advice on the installation as I am learning as I go. Just wanted to say that the layout looks really nice- tons of storage and a clean look! Best of luck!!!
Take Care!!!

I've finally got the other wall looking decent in the planner. You'd think it would've been easier, since it has fewer cabinets. The table doesn't show up in the 2D view for some reason, only the 3D view. If I stick to all standard cabs, this is what I'll go with. It's exactly what's there now, only with extra top cabs.
Because of the piping from the wall, the right edge of the sink cab has to stay where it is. I do have a little (~10") play on the left edge. I've been considering making a 6" cabinet there with the 30" oven drawer for a door. Are there any pictures of this being done? I don't know how noticeable the different in door heights would be. This space would be for cutting board and cookie sheets, because I don't know where else they'd go really.
Someone also suggested putting a custom 6" bookshelf at the end of the run, accessible from the side, but that seems like a lot of work, and a good number of my cookbooks are deeper than 6".
I also have an idea for the sink, though I don't know how realistic it is. I have a 14" wide dish rack similar to this. Currently my sink is about 6" from the fridge, and the dish rack is on the right side, preventing the dishwasher counter space from being used as prep space. So I'm thinking about moving the sink all the way to the far right of the sink cab and putting the dish drainer between the fridge and the sink. Would this work with a 21" wide undermount sink? Would I have to get a smaller sink, or would it just be too cramped regardless? I could also move my sink to the left, maybe 3-4" from the fridge (how close is too close?), which would gain me a couple inches of countertop at the end of the run.
Any thoughts and feedback are very welcome. Thanks!
Hi - If you don't need to keep the dish rack out all the time, but need one for fine china or crystal that you don't want to put in the dishwasher, I have found this dishdrainer that is self-contained (water goes into the integrated tray). Dish Doctor By Marc Newson For Magis - Magis - Marc Newson - Home Furnishings - Unica Home This one can be stored on it's side under the sink when not in use - it's only 4" tall, so is really space saving. I'm getting the clear one as the colors aren't quite me! :-))
