Hey guys I'm in the planning stages of our new kitchen. Was wanting some open shelving on both side of the sink. Looks like I'm leaning toward 3 shelves of the Lack series. Has anyone done this before? and if so can you post pics or link me to it, thanks.

I don't see why it would be a problem provided you mount the shelves appropriately. I have three over my "bar area" with lots of glass- some of the glass is black amethyst from the 40's and I feel perfectly comfortable with it on the shelves.

I used brown/black Lack shelves and about 8 dry-wall anchors for each.

I've got 2 shelves that I use for cookery books. If you click on the gallery link under my name, there are a couple of photos that show the shelves. One piece of advice from our GC was to angle the posts that go into the wall slightly downwards, so that the shelves are at a slight angle upwards when unloaded; that way when they're loaded they'll be horizontal (rather than pointing slightly downwards causing all your stuff to slide off...)

I used Lack in the kitchen also -- for cookbooks, bananas, a tea chest. We love the open shelving. I think I have a picture in my galleries. The white gloss looks perfect with Abstrakt White.

Thanks guys, just what I needed to know. That they can support the weight. I will be drilling new holes to line up with the studs. I was thinking of putting some type of beadboard on the edges to keep stuff from sliding off. I'll also try the slightly downard pointing screws. Thanks again.

I looked into this and spoke to a number of people, including contractors and those who have floating shelves, and I do not think that the lack system can support more than lightloads UNLESS you really take care to reinforce the installation -- I would use very long bolts that go deep into the studs, personally. My friend installed the lack shelves and they did crash to the floor recently after being up without incident for a while. She did not have that much on them, either.

We are doing floating shelves but I am doing something similar to the person who did the lovely abstrakt white kitchen (as described in the article "Masterpiece in Abstrakt" posted on this site. He had steel brackets made and installed them behind the drywall directly onto the studs. Each bracket had rods that slid into the shelves.

Anyway, I think the lacks are gorgeous but I am too afraid to use them.
