I looked into this and spoke to a number of people, including contractors and those who have floating shelves, and I do not think that the lack system can support more than lightloads UNLESS you really take care to reinforce the installation -- I would use very long bolts that go deep into the studs, personally. My friend installed the lack shelves and they did crash to the floor recently after being up without incident for a while. She did not have that much on them, either.
We are doing floating shelves but I am doing something similar to the person who did the lovely abstrakt white kitchen (as described in the article "Masterpiece in Abstrakt" posted on this site. He had steel brackets made and installed them behind the drywall directly onto the studs. Each bracket had rods that slid into the shelves.
Anyway, I think the lacks are gorgeous but I am too afraid to use them.
