We finally installed the new refrigerator this week and are almost done. We are installing open floating shelves in wood stained to match the floors to the left of the sink window and to the left of the range hood.
Toekicks will be steel.
There is going to be a taller grill at the top of the fridge; it had to be ordered and is en route, apparently.
You are going to love your kitchen; I am sure. The IKEA ones have so many cool and fun features; I love playing in mine (and I used to avoid my kitchen at all costs).
Awesome!
2 questions:
How did you build the microwave door? special hinges, special door?
What did you use for your stainless panel over the range?
Thanks, Ben
Thanks!
The door is just an 18 inch tall x 24 wide door to which we attached lift up hinges instead of door hinges. The hinges are from hafele -- hafele.com -- and are the Stratos model. The "cubby" is not a cubby per se; we put a shelf immediately over the drawer stack, and another one about 18 inches higher (which makes the top of the part holding the microwave and the floor of the 39 tall section).
With that hinge, you do have to take care to make sure to pick the appropriate door size -- we initially had a 24 inch door there and there was an additional 6 inches hanging below the bottom of the hinge that was blocking the line of sight to the microwave (i.e. you'd have to limbo to access the microwave). Because the hinge position must be calculated from the top of the door and must be set a certain amount from the top, we couldn't repositon the door higher on the hinge to fix the problem. The options were to place the microwave cubby higher in the cab or to swap the 24 tall door for an 18, which we did (previously we had an internal drawer under the microwave; we simply put a 6.25 drawer front on that instead, so now there is an 18 door over a visible 6 inch drawer, instead of a 24 door with a hidden drawer inside).
Sorry if that was confusing; it is a little hard to explain.
Also, the hinges themselves take up a fair amount of room in the cab - I think they are about one inch thick, including their hinge covers (those oval grey things). That would have made getting a microwave in there kind of tough, but in fact the hinge covers pop off easily so they can be removed to allow a microwave to be slid into the cabinet. (We also installed an outlet in the back of the cabinet; that may be obvious but thought I'd point it out anyway).
I went with a microwave cubby because I personally prefer to hide the microwave a little bit, but I like the fact that that slot could just as easily house a built-in microwave or convection oven with a trim kit, if I or a future owner ever want a different setup. It also makes it easy to upgrade the microwave, replace it if it ever breaks, and can be used to house a different type of appliance (or even be easily converted back to pantry space). Also, because it has the unfortunate position of being near a doorway, a regular door there would block that door way and make it impossible to pass while the microwave is in use. With the lift up hinge, there is plenty of room to walk by it when open.
RE the steel backsplash under the hood: it is made by Viking and sold separately as an accessory part (i.e., you don't have to buy anything else from them if ou want one). Mine is 30 wide x 36 tall, but they come in all the widths of Viking ranges, I believe. It was fairly reasonable (for Viking, anyway) -- it was approx. $120, and is very nicely made. It simply screws into the wall.
Edited to add: one warning about that hinge is that they are really pricey; I nearly keeled over but really, really wanted one and needed it because of the doorway issue. Itwas $180. I felt a little better when I found out that appliance garages with the same lift up hinge from Viking or Miele are over $1000 -- but not much better!
Ooh- this looks fantastic! I hadn't seen a good shot of the drawers stack and Abstrakt white section - just beautiful.
Thanks! That part just went in on Monday. It was just a 65-inch wide cave before! The old kitchen had a small closet to the left of the fridge that wasted much useable space (7 inches in width for studs and the door frame took u a lot of room). The cabinetry was a better option so we ripped out the pantry closet. The closet also did not leave enough room for most 36 inch fridges; there was barely 35 inches left over to house a fridge. The new configuration allows a 36 or even a 42.
Well, I'm all for ripping out useless closets! We got a mudroom sink out of ours. Although now we are storing all the brooms in the garage - have to decide if I care enough about that to figure out something else to do.
