The short version of my current problem is that I don't know that the 6'6"x3' island I planned is going to work out, so I started considering using capita brackets and a 48"x15" piece or numerar for a raised bar instead.

But while I was searching around online, I found quite a few people with very bad things to say about raised bars and that if they could do it over again, they would've done a large flat island instead.

Anyone out there with an opinion either way?

Count me in on the flat-islander side. I have one and it is SO useful. I can't imagine having a separation or a raised bar. I also don't like the higher barstools, I prefer the counter height, and I imagine things will inevitably roll off the narrow raised area.

I've changed my mind about the 2 height islands as well. I was going to put one in and I have reconsidered.

Also, I've started working for a small design firm and my designer boss absolutely HATES raised bars on islands. We got plans from the architect for a clients new space and it had a raised bar island. My boss said she will battle that idea all the way. She is totally against them.

Plus I think that they are going 'out of fashion.' If you want it contemporary, that is where the trend is going.

Flat all the way! Our neighbors did their kitchen a few months ago & ripped out their raised bar & that's when I realized how much I hated ours. So, we ripped ours out too

ugh. this island counter is making me crazy.
