Planner help - wall cabs?

I am trying out the planner in my quest to design a perfect STAT kitchen. But I can't seem to place wall cabinets or anything on the wall. They won't "move" up from the floor. Any advice?

Also, are there any rules of thumb in designing kitchens, such as how much wall space should be between a drawer and a wall so the drawer doesn't rub against the wall? I am guessing this is what the Filler choices are? You just set the width according to how wide you need it?

If anyone can point me in the direction of basic instructions for this planner, I'd appreciate it! Thanks

Re: Planner help - wall cabs?

Sometimes it is easier to place the wall cabs if you switch to 3D mode and move them onto the wall in 3D.

In terms of clearances between drawers and walls, drawers come straight out from the cabs so you can get them quite close -- doors need more clearance to allow room to fully open them and for their handles. That said, I allowed for about 2 inches of filler between walls and cabs. Also, where you really have to watch clearances on drawers is in corners where they open perpendicular to another cabinet or an appliance (such as a range). Then, you need to allow for a filler piece equal to the handle depth + 1/8 inch (that measure applies to the visible part of the filler piece; if one side is sandwiched in the corner, you need to add an additional amount).

Your best bet is to post your preliminary plan, and tons of people here wuold be happy to check to see if your fillers are adequate. Without seeing the space, it is hard to advise.

Also, somewhere on this site are threads dedicated to planner use tips; I think they appear as stickies at the top of the kitchen planning forum but am not sure.

Re: Planner help - wall cabs?

Thank you for your quick response! I did look at the stickies and the threads I scanned were more like hints to get good results rather than instructions for the clueless! I will try your suggestions, though. And thanks for the clearances info. I will look at that in my plan more closely. THEN I should be ready to post!
