Discuss Kitchen Inventory on IKEAFANS.com. We're Personalizing the IKEA Experience. Kitchen Inventory - Need help with planning your remodel? Want a kitchen planner to review your ideas? This is the happenin' spot!.
The layout of my kitchen is pretty much done, but I'm still trying to decidewhat pieces I need (deep drawers, 4 drawers, pull-outs, pop-ups or what).
I began looking around my torn-up mess of a kitchen to try to see exactly what I need cabinets for. Well, it's been so long since I've had a real kitchen (4 or 5 years at least) that I don't seem to have anything anymore. I think it's all migrated to the basement or garage or garbage over the years. I obviously need to repopulate!
So, I thought it might be fun if we all dida quick inventory of "what you store in your kitchen". This might help me remember exactly why I needed 25 new cabinets! (Currently, I'm operating with just 4.) Can you help?
I'll start:
Food - mostly fresh, all stored in fridge/freezer. Home-canned tomatoes, spices and a few oils and dry goods (nowliving ona bookshelf in the family room). Coffee and tea.
Paper towels in bulk.
Dishes and glasses and utensils.
Platters.
Tupperware-type stuff.
Cookbooks.
Dog food.
Crockpot.
KitchenAid Mixer.
Pots and pans.
Pizza oven.
OK, there's gotta be more.... What am I forgetting?

I'm sure there's more I'm not remembering... I haven't had a kitchen for three years, two months, and twenty days. Not that I'm counting or anything...
baking stuff: measuring cups and spoons, sifters, graters etc.
dishtowels
potholders
small appliances: can opener, toaster, etc.
parts and pieces of small appliances like food processor parts, blender parts etc
long and short utensils for cooking
lids for said pots and pans
oven dishes: casseroles, baking sheets etc
cooling racks
once-a-year stuff
coffee maker
a junk drawer for all that misc stuff
Thanks for the thread! This will help me take stock in what I do/do not need for my own remodel:
1. How about a place for address/phone book, paper, pens, scissors, etc. Didn't know if you were incorporating that into your kitchen or not by the phone.
2. spices
3. perhaps a pullout (if you have room) for oils, etc.
We keep all of our bulk food out in the garage shelves...

Reloading the kitchen was harder for me than making all the remodelling decisions. There's so much pressure to have a perfect spot for everything. I'll give you a rundown of stuff by where I keep things:
2 15" high pantries - oils, vinegars, canned and packaged food, wine, coffee beans, big bin of rice, breads, baking ingredients and some huge frying pans up really high.
over fridge cab - cutting boards, pizza peel, baking racks on a shelf, and bulky foods above (excess stuff from Costco shopping, essentially)
sink cab - cleaning supplies, trash + bags
15" 4-drawer base - 1) wraps and baggies, 2) knives 3) odd sized graters, wine opener, mouli, etc. 4) dish towels
18" 3-drawer base - still working on how to configure this, but all 3 drawers hold an array of utensils
30" base with drawers - top 2 drawers with good silverware and junky silverware, big drawer full of pots, big drawer full of plastic containers
12" base pullout - 2 drawers of spices, bin for paper recycling
12" base cab with vertical dividers - long pans and baking sheets
blind corner base cab - blender, cuisinart, waffle iron, stockpot, big pans
2 sets of upper cabinets - one devoted to glasses, cups, mixing bowls, measuring cups, etc; other (with glass doors) holds 2 sets of dishes and some of my pottery collection
another 30" base - stationery drawer, and empty drawer, a big drawer full of baking pans, a big drawer of cookbooks arranged in 2 rows with spines facing up
24" wall cab used as base - kitchenaid mixer, inboxes for me and DH + a bill box, several huge phonebooks, plug inside for phone
15" 3-drawer base - large and small drawers of tools and junk; large drawer of cooking cutters and decorating tools
12" base pullout - drawers for dog leashes, vitamins, brushes, etc; bin below was meant to be for dog food, but currently used for glass recycling
I have an antique secretary where I store candles, tableclothes, napkins and display more pottery. Downstairs is a kitchenette where I store stuff I don't use, and I also have a pantry down there for paper goods, more cleaning supplies, etc.
Okay, having written this out I actually feel a sense of order. On the other hand, I think I want Eva to come and re-organize my kitchen! Check out her finished photos to see where she puts all her stuff.
I'm getting closer... my old kitchen is in boxes in a storage container in the yard of the new house... while we live in the camper for a couple more weeks until things are done done done!
My old kitchen contained:
1drawer of misc. gadgets (along the lines of garlic press, extra stirring spoons, hand mixer beaters, etc.)
1 small cabinet of cutting boards and glass measuring cups
1 large cabinet of tupperware, mixing bowls, hand mixer, waffle iron, roasting pan
1 drawer of silverware and knives
1 large cabinet of pots and pans, crock pot, casserole dishes, small glass storage containers and the ever-important mini-bundt pans and angel food cake pans!
drawer base: 1 drawer of more misc. gadgets, 1 drawer of foil, baggies, saran wrap, etc., 1 drawer with napkins, placemats, oven mitts, misc. instruction manuals, etc.
under/in stove: pizza stone, baking sheets
junk drawer (rubber bands, tape, batteries, and the like...)
1 cabinet of misc. baking pans
up top: spices, vitamins, etc., then plates and bowls (everyday stuff), then baking supplies, then cooking oils, breadcrumbs, etc., then glasses, then the above-refrigerator cabinet of no return (= things I never use and kept meaning to put in a yard sale)
Then there was some open storage on a baker's rack for micro, cookbooks, more junk in drawers, also coffee pot, toaster oven, blender, mini-chopper and dish rack on counter (arrgh, where did all this junk come from?)... then a pantry for larger food items...
Oh, and don't forget coffee mugs. Oh and there was a hanging pot rack, too...
My challenge, as previously mentioned by others, is how to arrange all of this exactly perfectly in my new Ikea (Fagerland) kitchen...
The plan is, from left to right, bottom, then top:
two 15" pull-out pantries: above will go crockpot, blender, lobster pot, etc.; below will go all foodstuffs except spices and maybe baking stuff
under sink: cleaning products and maybe a small trash barrel
21" base drawer: silverware and knives
21" base: not quite sure yet about putting pull-out baskets in here, but casserole dishes, glass measuring cups, cutting boards will go in here
corner lazy susan: all pots & pans and lids
under stove: pizza stone and baking sheets
4-drawer base: top 2 drawers: gadgets and cooking utensils, 3rd drawer: foils, wraps, etc., 4th drawer: probably dishtowels, pot holders, etc.
upper 12 in cab: glasses and mugs
upper 21" cab: plates and bowls
upper corner cab: not sure yet -- either the nice dishes we never use or all the nice glasses we never use...
upper 12" cab: hmm... I can't remember what goes here! I wrote it down somewhere, but who knows where that slip of paper is, now that we've moved!
cab above microhood: seldom-used baking pans (see above re: mini-bundt pans and angel-food pans)
lower shelves of upper 2: dishes, bowls (a few different kinds), a couple of serving dishes
upper shelves: add'l serving platters/dishes
pantry cabinet (24")
l'm really proud of what we did on this one... the lower section is wire baskets (3); storing food stuffs- pasta; canned goods; flour, sugar, cereal, etc. then at about counter height is a full depth shelf -- we have a large lazy susan on it with spices/oils/vinegars/honey etc. Above that shelf are two 12" deep shelves - with small appliances- toaster, blender, food processor, etc. that are easy to access (even though we did give up a bit of storage to make the access easy. The upper section of this pantry cabinet have baking eqpt (specialty things like springform pans; muffin tins, etc. and extras- backup jarred/canned goods...
Lower cabinets hold things like microwave; casserole/corning ware; saran;foil; etc. silverware, kid stuff - plates; lunchboxes; kid cooking items; tupperware; pot lids; baking sheets; cooking utensils-spoons; spatulas; etc,
The last remaining cab in the kitchen is the over fridge one which has the ice cream maker; large pitchers; coffee carafes; etc. In the laundry room the upper cabinet hold paper goods; misc. household information; other entertaining and excess stuff (like baggies, etc.) The base cabs have recyclables in one and laundry in the other. The 15" pantry in the laundry holds cleaning supplies; laundry supplies; the iron; paper bags; etc.
