New to fan site and considering a new kitchen. Live in Marylandbetween College Park / White Marsh stores. Don't feel at ease with using IKEA's computer program. Will someone in the store design a kitchen for me? Do they guarantee the plan will 'work' (both fit and function)? :? Do they know about building codes? How far would my gas stove need to be away from the wall/window?Thanks for any feedback.

Hi and Welcome!!

IKEA is a do it yourself kind of place. They do have kitchen designers who will look over your plan and point out any obvious errors, but the rest they leave in your hands.

There are several of us here (me included) who love designing kitchens and would love to help you design yours If you'll post a schematic type drawing of your kitchen showing the dimensions, locations of doors, windows and utilities, what part of the country you're in and a brief Mission Statement (see the thread on how to write that) you'll get back some great plans and ideas!

Thank you so much for your offer to help. I saw the mission statement and looks likethere is really a lot of work for me todo.I'm at the initial stages since I am also considering if a wall should be moved/removed. Although not load bearing, it does have major plumbing/heating and some electrical iwithin it.

I'll keep your kind offer in mind.

Re. how close the stove is to the window - I always thought you couldn't/shouldn't have it near the window because the wind might blow the gas out/curtains or something else into the flame. Plus it's also just annoying when the flame gets blown to one side by a draught. In the flat we're moving into, however, the stove is currently near the window - I am right in thinking it shouldn't be, aren't I?

I agree with your general statement and my home is about 50 years old. All of the homes in my neighborhood have small kitchens and most of thestoves were initially by the window. My concern is if I move the stove what are the county building code requirements for distance from wall/window.

Typically the way the building codes work is if something has always been permitted and the code changes those that had been done the 'pre-revised code' are not required to be redone. But if subsequently remodled based upon a revised code, they can not then'go back' to the old code requirements.I don't even know what the code is for my area.

You should really go down to your local town hall and find out the ordinances, or speak to a general contractor you know to find out what you can and cannot do. Generally speaking, moving appliances and plumbing/gas/electric lines and/or walls requires a permit, so you'll have to go to the town anyway.
