Can someone fill me in on this since when I change to birch effect frame nothing changes on the picture on ikea.com. Good enough for a few inches here and there, or should I go ahead and order cover panels? We are talking about an inch of filler that I am nervous about placing for the sake of tolerences.
With Kalsebo, I'd order the cover panels. With white or birch, you don't have to worry so much, but you do still have to plan how to cover the side of the wall cabinets (where they project a bit due to the suspension rail). Not a BIG deal, but still....something to think about. For filler in between, I would just use some beech toekick material.
Birch effect is what it sounds like...looks like birch, but not actually birch. Look at Adel birch for the color/woodtone.
I think it does depend on your door style and personal preference. I have Adel Medium Brown and chose a birch frame (except for the one cabinet over the sink where birch wasn't an option).
Here's a

of some of the cabinets without side panels so you can see the birch effect frames.
Take a look at StacyLu's or jgsearls' Progress Blogs in the Progress Blogs forum. They've each got the birch effect frames with Adel Medium Brown doors. Also, in the Finished Kitchens Gallery on the Fansite side of things (click on Home in the upper right corner, then navigate to Finished), take a look at evaperconti's Adel Birch kitchen...she used birch frames with no cover panels, so you can see how closely the frames match the birch finish in Adel.
