So we ordered all of our cabinets last night from Ikea Schaumburg (a nightmare I will post separately about for those going through Schaumburg), and I am suddenly in a panic about our plans. Our current refrigerator, which we are not replacing, is 33" wide, but in our plans we used a 36" cabinet to preserve the option of a wider fridge for future buyers. That meant we could only have a 24" cabinet for our big pots and pans cabinet, a cabinet that does not have pull out drawers and that I now think is too small for the pan cupboard. I now want to go back down to the 33" fridge space, up the 24" cab to a 30" (and change the one other cabinet on that wall from 15" down to 12")--I know this will be a tremendous hassle (although we haven't yet picked up our cabinets, so it could be worse). Do people think it's worth it? Thoughts please!!
I think a bigger fridge is going to be more valuable especially for resale than a slightly bigger pots and pans cabinet....however....!
When I looked at the ikeaplan1, you have a 27" stove there. Most American stoves are 30", so unless you're planning on a smaller size stove you'll have to cut something else back anyway.
thanks--maybe we'll stop the presses on trying to cancel our whole order. For some reason we couldn't get the right stove size in the program, but I think we accounted for the full 30" in the cabinetry. I'd better go double-check . . . !
In the planner, if you chose "Your Own Appliances" they don't have a 30" range in there...but the "IKEA Appliances by Whirlpool" tab does, the Hemkar is 30".
emmjay: In the plan I worked on, I put a 33" in Frig. and a 30" stove in the plan. Remember that I also said that that took every bit of your space on that wall so you would not be able to do cover panels for the Adel Med. Brown (originally you had wanted Adel Birch and that didn't need the cover panels.).
If it helps, I currently have a 33" frig., we have four in the family and it works fine for us. I would definitely change it back and get your 30" drawer base; 24" won't be enough.
Yeah, that was the plan I liked but I didn't want to forego the cover panels, so that's how we ended up back with the 36" fridge space. I think though that if we have a 12" cabinet between stove and wall, the 30" pan cabinet and 33" fridge space, we can have cover panels and about 3" to spare. Since this remodel is really for resale, it's a tough call. If it was just our family, I'm not worried about 33" fridge . . . arggh :?
Just my opinion, but unless someone walks through with a tape measure, I don't see how they're going to notice 3" difference in the frig. size. Just make sure when you sell that you keep the frig. clutter-free and it will look like you have plenty of space. (Same principle you use when someone buying looks in the closet -- downsize the contents of the closet and make it look efficient.). I don't think I could tell when looking at my 33" that it wasn't a 36". It looks big. The only thing that may make the difference is the fact that IKEA doesn't have a 33" over-the-frig. cab. and you would have to use the 30" and filler. If a buyer sees that they don't have anywhere to store their pans and skillets, that will be a huge thing, too.
Whichever you decide to do, if it were me, I would definitely have the larger base cabinet to the left of the stove to get your stove out of the doorway.
Good points -- I also don't think our home is in a market where the two-door fridge is a necessity. Yeah, we did already order, so that's a huge pain. But we haven't picked up yet so it may be worth all the hassle now to make sure we get what we want . . .
Another vote for keeping small fridgedoing abigger pots and pans drawer!
Just the slide-out feature alone would be worth it -- think of how nice it would be to be able to getthat bigpot out of the back of your cabs without kneeling on the floor and pulling everything in frontout first
Don't worry about having already ordered. Did you get a card with a name and number for Kitchen After Sales? Call that person, and explain that you've just realized there are some changes that need to be made. They should be able to help you, but you may still have to go back into the store.
