Okay, so I have this sexy little range hood (the Broan 30" Silhouette in Brushed Aluminum) which, due to having no uppers, is being built into a drywall chase. I had planned to just paint it the same color as the wall, but now my dad is suggesting that I do something (like tile) to jazz it up. The overall dimensions are 4x4, so I could go a little crazy even with $$$ tiles.

However, my cabinets will be Arlig Beech, with a mix of Grundtal and LACK shelves, a capiz shell pendant from West Elm, and Beluga Beige laminate (which is a touch funky - a busy little pattern of circles). The backsplashwill befrosted glass secured by IMPERATIV rails topped with plugmold. The appliances are all black and/or stainless.

It's sort of working kitchen meets 70's retro feel. Complete with "Midnight at the Oasis" playing in the background.

Also, the chase forms an "inverted corner" - meaning that the range is at the very end of my run, so the chase builds out directly from the wall. More to the point, it isn't centered, but rather on the far right of the room. I already have an exposed brick chimney. My thought is too much stuff is going to take away from the cool slim hood (it's basically a pullout glass shelf). On the other hand, am I missing a place for real wow factor?

I sort of see the lamp and the floating shelves (and the wall of MALMA mirrors in the dining area) as the "wow" of the room. There really isn't a major wow feature on the working wall - unless people get really excited by the LG fridge...

So, would you tile or just stick with wall color? If I went with tiles I'd be leaning toward shimmery glass that would pick up my beiges and browns and a touch of pale blue here and there I suppose.

oooh! oooh! oooh! Fun, fun! What would this be...a hooziesplat? That sounds obscene...an Hoodziesplat? That sounds violent! Hmmm....well, either way, this could be fun!

Capiz shell, you say? Can you post a link or a pic? I'm feeling lazy today...

Here's the lamp:

Oh, how I love it. Let me count the ways.

It is not hanging in a direct line from the chase.

Did I mention the tall HJUVIK? That might be some wow

ETA: The pics of the range hood online are goofy. They have it built into this drywalled faux finished thing. Ugh. Maybe that's why I resist the tarting up of my chase...

How about something like this:

NuGlass, NuBrick #7, The Maestro (where else? )

I think it's a clearish glass, with grey/tan and blue streaks through it. It's shown on a rusty brown background, so that's affecting the appearance. Likewise, you could alter the appearance with the grout you choose to go with it. It's on clearance, too!

You didn't say what your wall color is....do we get to vote on thattoo?

Check out the "Elements" line of glass tiles by Arizona Tile. They have a color called Ice which would complement your capiz shell pendant and would be sensational.

Inspired by Susan and Eva, I looked at Maestro and found their Seaside Glass: Whitewater: http://www.mglasstile.com/catalog/it...574/508637.htm

Only $18 sq. ft (well, I hope he meant a sq ft! He did say just "foot")...so for my space $350ish.

Hmm, but a potential lot of impact. And nice play off the capiz, Eva.

I shall look for other sources.

ETA: the shells on my pendant are actually taupe-y rather than white. I actually got my lamp at World Market for 1/2 the price of West Elm...

I thought you said it was 4 sq. ft? That would be $72. How'd you get $350??? Oh, wait...now I see you said 4' x 4'=16 sq. ft. Still, that's $288, not $350. I admit...a little pricier than you'd probably like....

We'll keep up the good search, but now...I have a meeting to go to!

Math is *so* not my thing. It's what got between me and my Latin honors in college. Well, that and the 2 stunning D's I earned in Biology for Liberal Arts Majors. :?

And actually, I'm okay with a little $$ for lots of *pop*. I may have to order a sample. I spoke to Alan. Any feedback? I recall Reese is to pieces.

I don't know...I just chatted with the gal who answers the phones...Katherine? Something like that. Very personable, and since my order was so small (5 sq. ft) she didn't bring out any of the big guns--lucky me, apparently.

Funny, that Seaside Glass is one that Sweeby just postedon the THS forums a day or two ago for someone else's kitchen. I personally think it would look better in yours! Mainly because you have lots of other patterns and textures going on.

Let's see....stainless shelves, fridge and stove (?or is it black?), Beech cabinets and counters, black dishwasher, frosted glass, capiz shells, Beluga Beige. What stain/color are your LACK shelves, and what color is your wall, dangit!?!

Help me to be helping you.

Susan

Let's see... the wallswill beBehr Sterling (shocker, it's a silvery grey), the LACK shelves are beech. The dishwasher is black, but the stove is stainless, as is the range hood and fridge (well, actually the fridge is "titanium")

Does that help?
