Has anyone ever tried to take the glass out of a tall Rubrik glass door and use it as a backsplash?

I'm assuming that the glass is tempered, and the edge can be trimmed off with a metal mounting strip like the ones used to hold formic panels.

Is this a crazy idea?

People certainly use glass for backsplashes but I don't know how the Rubrik is mounted, which makes a big difference! You can buy the glass shelves by themselves, if you like that look....

anyway, I saw your question had not been answered and I know I haven't done much to resolve that, but at least I can say "Welcome to Ikeafans!"

Do you want to take the glass out of the aluminum frame? you could always just use the frame as your mounting point. (now I'm wondering if the Rubrik frame just screws together picture-frame style... )

I did read somewhere about using a tall Rubrik door at the side of a tall cabinet as a "white board" - you can write on the glass w / dry-erase markers - messages, shopping lists, etc.

	W definition W is a wall cabinet designation, as in W18, can be a stand-in for Wide, or when followed by a / stands for With.

Not sure about a RUBRIK, but I know you can take the aluminum edges off an AVISKT glass door... Just not sure if they use the same attachment system.

If they do, you can use spreader clamps (used for woodworking) as long as you push the short ends off. Just spread them as far apart as they will go, then wait let it sit for awhile then go back and retighten the spreaders. Keep doing that and one end should eventually pop free. The edge of the glass is attached to the aluminum frame with caulk and there is a metal "L" insert joining the corner together. I'll try and post some pictures later in case it's of any use.

I never tried it. It frankly looked too daunting. We made a number of customizations to our kitchen and laundry room, but that wasn't one of them. I opted to use a rail of the countertop material (Vetrazzo) for a backsplash. I ended up wanting as few changes of texsture and materials as possible. We used a discontinued Vetrazzo color called "millifiori" with Nexus brown-black and white glass front appliances. Sometimes less is more.
