Flush-mount induction cooktop

Hi everybody, first post other than my "hello" message elsewhere in the forum.

I want to flush mount an induction cooktop into one of the wooden Ikea countertops and was wondering if anybody has any experience positive or negative with this. I'm not sure whether this will be a DIY project or whether Ikea can do the necessary routing under their "to order" countertop option.

Any experiences or suggestions would be appreciated.

J.

Re: Flush-mount induction cooktop

Hi and welcome!

IKEA doesn't do ANY custom work...they simply contract out with various local fabricators. If you purchase one of the IKEA stock countertops, you're on your own in terms of modifying them.

I would suggest you check the specs for your cooktop to find out what the manufacturer has to say about flush-mounting and all the other specifications you'll need to meet for a safe install. Once you know that it is allowable, then you can decide if you'll have a fabricator prepare your countertop or if you can DIY or hire a handyman to modify your wood countertop.

Re: Flush-mount induction cooktop

The cooktop is specifically designed to be flush mounted so no problem there. The main difference from a standard drop-in installation is that you have to make a shallow cut in the counter where the glass lip goes. But I think that as long as the counter is over an inch thick any should serve just fine.

Here in Spain you can have Ikea cut the counters to your specs, including a cutout for a stove, so I may go ahead and have that done and then get a carpenter to do the additional cut that's required.

Thanks

Well that's interesting about the IKEA in Spain ! You shouldn't have any problem routing the channel for the glass in a wood countertop.

Re: Flush-mount induction cooktop

If it is a solid surface countertop then you have to be sure the glass top does not touch the countertop material. Flush-mounted would function and look great, I'd say. I would get a professional countertop fabricator to do this. Ikea's is probably good because you can see their work in the store. I have brought my own materials to fabricators and most wouldn't touch my job unless they provided the materiials. These people should be more cooperative now with the new economy, so ask. I went to Epic Stone in Weymouth, MA where they did a great job by hand and customized the counters I brought in. You have to get the guy who knows how to handle the router.
