After getting a quote of $20K for italian cabinets, I took a more serious look at what some of the IKEA fans have done and have been sooo impressed (splatsgirls' kitchen was beautiful) so I'm giving ita go.
We're taking the kitchen down to the studs but as of right now intend to keep the doorways where they are (even though its ackward)and windows won't be moving. I tried to add a
pic
. of the kitchen in its current state but it said it was too big of a file.:X
I would welcome anyand all comments to my currently Hallarum, but could be NexusBlack-Brown design. Its on the Ikea Planner Username: jublank@hotmail.com / password butter1
My mission:
A Contemporary styled kitchen that won't look entirely out-of-place ina1938split level home.
As efficient/ergonomic as possible - dishes in drawers, cabinets at 16.5-17" high (I'm short), microwave near the fridge& toaster, pantry goods easily accessible (cereal near the milk)etc.
Provide a place tohave a quick or casual meal and be able to watch a little tv or have people (guest or children) sitat while I make dinner.
Generally there is only one person cooking at a time, but more counter space is better.
Easy access outside to the barbque (we're putting in a sliding glass door) and easily continue cooking indoors afterwards
When looking at the design keep the following things in mind:
I'm a beginner
w
/ manipulating the program - I realize the cooktop is on the floor but couldn't figure out how to fix it
The wall that juts into the room can't be moved.
The idea with oven and the pull out pantry is to have the pantry sit in the extra space that will be behind the oven cabinet. The program won't let me place the pieces as I would like but ideally the pantry would pull out towards the side of the fridge and the ove would face into the center of the kitchen. Is that a terrible idea??
The strangely placed dishwasher that isby the doorway is a substitute for a wine fridge.
Can't wait to hear your input / suggestions!!! Thank you so much!!!

W definition
W is a wall cabinet designation, as in W18, can be a stand-in for Wide, or when followed by a / stands for With.
I'll be happy to take a look at your kitchen tomorrow morning first thing. It's late and I'm quite sleep deprived so anything I said right now probably wouldn't make much sense in the light of day, so I think it's best to wait for coherency.
WOW!! It's great to see someone that knows what they want!! It's very helpful with all the info. you've given. I'll try to get some time to look at it. I'm also considering Hallarum for mine (love splatgirls!!) And welcome!!
Well.........unfortunately I don't have the 2007 planner installed and I guess that's where you have yours, no? I tried to pull your plan up on the 2006 and there wasn't anything there. Sorry! I'll get around to installing the 2007 one of these days!:?
Yep, I just installed the 2007 planner, I'm sorry you're unable to see it! It didn't take long to install - I was able to do it during one of my daughter's notoriously short naps
Have you been to an IKEA store yet? I ask just so you know the 'feel' of the cabinets you are looking at - its easy to get blown away by IKEA prices, but fact is some people just don't like IKEA's feel. My wife and I, on the other hand, were blown away by IKEAs quality to value ratio.
Also, bear in mind that IKEA cabinets are not overy ornate/decorated - but you stated you were looking for a contemporary look, which IKEA has in spades.
The Mass IKEA store has a really nice Hallarum display - to get a modern feel they match it up with IKEA's sliding, slatted metal doors on some of the cabinets (tried to look for the item in the catalog & couldnt find it) - they also have a 'wine cellar' to the side full of the GORM shelves stained a dark color to match the Hallarum. Its a nice effect. (Note: Now I'm going to wait & have someone tell me the display I'm thinking of isn't Hallarum I'm doing this from memory.... next time I'm there I should take pics of the displays)
I went to the store with two IKEA naysayers and they were impressed with the display, so you know the style is eyecatching.
I think going to an IKEA store is an important first step in the process - you can see the cabinets in action & the various options. Since you will be doing this yourself, you can map out a ton of options & I find its only seeing the cabinets in action that I get my ideas...
jg:Here's a link to a picture I took while at IKEA Shaumburg. They used a PAX aluminum/glass sliding door for their kitchen pantry in one of their displays. They combined it with the frames that are 13"xx deep. I thought it was pretty cool. So, we may be incorporating that into our kitchen. We're leaning toward Hallarum, but, I think it would look great with Adel White for a contemporary look also. Haven't 100% decided yet. But, I'm being persuaded by the great pics that everyone posts here!! I'm always amazed at how IKEA cabinets can be used in various and unique different ways.!!
Actually, it was a trip to Ikea Emeryville for something else that brought me back to seriously considering the kitchen. I can see why your friends were swayed since that's what happened to us! I spent about 2 hours there this week using their computer to do the design.
The styling is definitely up our alley. I really like the white but it would be an understatement to say my husband dislikes white which is why I'm looking at the Hallarum & Nexus Black-Brown. Plus our floors are a light red-oak and so I thought the contrast with a darker cabinet would look nice and not look like we're trying to match the floors.
do you know if the frames used are PAX too or just the sliding doors? I really like that look and the depth would be perfect. Plus that would give me a place to put cook books in addition to pantry items.
My other thought is to scrap the pull-out pantry behind the oven and replace it with shelving for cookbooks and then just use something like the PAX pantry in that photo for dry goods. My only issue with that set up is that the pantry is not quite as convenient to the fridge.
Yes, the box frames are PAX also. They have a deeper 22"xx and a shallow 13"xx. They come in either 19"xx wide or 39"xx wide. (the dimensions are a little over and I used the x's to show you that). The box frames come in birch or white. If you haven't seen it yet, here is a link to the PAX planner and you can set up the size box frames you want, as well as the doors. The sliding doors are the PAX Stordal.
The problem with this in the online catalog is they don't show all sizes and options for the sliding doors. The PAX Stordal doors also are sized to fit the 79"xx units (not just the 118") and you combine the 19"xx and 39"xx box frames to add up to that. It does say that it is not recommended that you use a combination of 19"xx, 39"xx, 19"xx for the 79"xx box frames because when you slide the door open, the side of the 39"xx frame will prevent access into the center. You would have to use either all 19"xx's or two 39"xx's.
I also think in the right kitchen that these wood sliding doors would look really nice and someone could sand and then paint them, or design them anyway they want.
My area we will be putting the PAX pantry in for kitchen storage is very convenient for anyone who needs to access it, so it will work great for us.
In the planner, you also have shallow high pantry storage that comes in 15" or 24" wide. They do have glass doors, but they are clear. You could use a film backing to frost them. This would be an alternative if you didn't have the space for the PAX units. I definitely wouldn't want glass shelves in there.
After seeing the PAX sliding doors in person, though, I'm pretty hooked. They look and function much nicer than I thought.
