I'm a long-time IKEA addict, but it's my first time to this site. I'm considering a kitchen re-design and I saw something in the Schaumburg (Chicago, IL) store that caught my attention. They used some Pax wardrobes with sliding doors as the main pantry/cabinet. I thought it was a creative idea, very economical, and gave the space a very clean, modern look. I don't always like how cabinets and hardware can break up a kitchen and make it look very cluttered (in my obsessive-compulsive opinion).
So I'm wondering...
1. Has anybody used Pax warddrobes instead of/in addition to kitchen cabinets?
2. How can I figure out load bearing limits of Pax shelves? I cannot find that info anywhere.
3. Anything you experts have to say about this idea?
It's definitely a viable option. If you look in the photos forum, there's some pix there of a business kitchen with PAX for the supply cabinet. I think laurie was also considering it.
PAX are slightly different depths than the kitchen cabinets. The weight limit of the shallow (13" deep) shelves is 55 lbs, the deep (22") shelves is 88 lbs. If you need more support, I'm sure you could reinforce the shelf with a rail or something like that.
Eva's right, we are considering the same setup. I'm in St. Louis and we visited the Shaumburg store a couple weeks ago and I loved the PAX as the pantry in their display. Although their display is the 118" doors/units, we only have space for the 79", so it won't make the statement that theirs did. All I see in the catalog is how the doors come with the 22" deep frames, so I'm assuming you can purchase the doors separate and then buy the shallow frames to go with them for the pantry. We haven't 100% made up our minds on the doorstyle, but it's leaning toward the Hallarum. I think the Hallarum and the stainless/glass doors will look terrific together! I also think that it would look great with white, but dh doesn't care for the adel white anymore (but I still do). Here's an adel white kitchen that I could easily see with the PAX for a pantry and would look terrific: http://www.flickr.com/photos/designenvy/203542894/
I'm sure if you used the 19" white frames vs. the 39" frames with the doors, the stability of your shelves would increase. Can't wait to see what you come up with!!
We're looking at the 13" deep PAX system for our pantry as well. Ideally we would get the 93"x 118", but we only have a 115' space. One concern we have is using large glass sliding doors in such a high travel area and low area. Does anyone have any experience or words of wisdom about using glass doors? I think the looks is great and I'm pushing hard to make it happen.
Well, I know that using glass cabs. backing an island are not good at an eating counter because of kicking the glass. But, unless you have small children that you're worried about throwing items and breaking the glass, I can't imagine it being a problem. From what I could tell in thePAX pantry display, the doors are extremely well made and the glassdoesn't seem to be cheap, thin glass. Is the clearance between where your sliding glass doors would be and other cabinets a factor? Again, someone would just be walking through and the doors are not going to protrude into your walking path when open. If there's a downside to it, I'm not seeing it.(although I haven't got them yet, so who knows?:shock
I don't imagine us playing baseball in our kitchen, but we do have a 3 year old. It's true, the glass in the PAX sliding door is different and thicker than in a regular cabinet. I'm not too concerned about it, but my husband is. We have a huge PAX wardrobe with sliding birch doors in our bedroom and love it. We also plan on making custom sliding doors for all the access off of our hallway leading into the kitchen. I like the sliding theme throughout the entire back of the house.
We'll have to make sure our boxer doesn't bring his rope (with huge knots on the end) upstairs in the kitchento play tug-a-war. Sometimes he shakes it violently and then throws it! He gets rather brain-dead when it comes to play time. I mistakenly told him there was a squirrel in the backyard and the glass sliding patio doors were open (the screen wasn't) and he ran right through the screen. I mean literally through the middle, leaving a big gaping hole in the center bending outward (it's metal)! Didn't even pull the screen out of the frame, just the hole.:? He didn't even break stride until he got to the middle of the yard and realized something wasn't right!
