Hello, I was hoping to get some comments on a new kitchen design. The house is a row home in Baltimore circa 1900. I would say there is an ecletic mix of original moldings and casings, with new floors, and updated light fixtures, so I think a modern asthetic would work.

We'd like our kitchen to be a "clean" ergonomic design. We'd like to be able to have two people work in the kitchen comfortably. We'd like to be able to have breakfast at a breakfast bar--formal dinners will be in the dining room. There is a lot of wood already in this house so I think we're going to be leaning towards either the abstrakt white or red for a brighter look.

We've put two versions of our design on the ikea site:

l:tom@google.com
p:ikea42007

A couple notes about the design, The small island opposite the U-kitchen design will be an overhang for the breakfast bar. Secondly, The sink will be a double sink in the corner next to the dishwasher and window. There is a bathroom on the "left side" of the plan which is why there is a "hallway" there.

When I get a chance, for reference, I'll post pictures of what the current state of the kitchen is.

Thanks for any help you can provide.
Cheers,
tom

Hi, Tom and welcome!

I took a look at your plan. The only difference seems to be the corner cabinet over by the fridge? I think it works better without the corner wall cabinet. It would be awkward to open and use it.

Also, is that really a washing machine, or should it be a dishwasher?

I suggest you look at using Abstrakt Red as the base units and Abs White as the uppers. I created a plan tweaking yours a bit. I put a run of double 24" wall cabinets on either side of the fan cabinet above the range, to make the door sizes a bit more consistent. Actually, there is only one 24 and a 12 on the left because of the appliance garage, but it could be a 24 inch, you'd just have a blind corner there. The window seems to be a bit obscured, I don't know if you have an accurate representation there or not, but if it does obscure it, I'd put a 12" wide cab at the end instead of the 24 to leave a little room.

Another option here would be stacked horizontals like you show over the island cabinet.

On the fridge wall I removed the tall pantry and in its place put a corner cabinet, matching the one on the opposite corner, and above it I put an 18" high 24 cabinet topped with a 39" high 24 cabinet to make an appliance garage/pantry space. You could also use the tall rollfront for a more modern aesthetic. I think this will give you better functionality. Of course, the tops of all the cabinets would line up, the planner is just persnickety about that.

You will need cover panels for all the exposed sides of the base cabinet, but the wall cabs can have the white frame and you may not need cover panels...of course, you might want them for a consistent look.

I'd recommend a brick fullheight backsplash as a nod to the rowhome history.

Anyway, see what you think!

evaperconti,

Thanks for the recommendations. I think the idea of mixing up the abs red and white would look great. Does anyone know of someone who has done that or has a picture of what that would look like? Also, would the new RUBRIK White glass door fronts work in these sizes? I think that might look good; thoughts?

Yeah the corner cabinet I thought would be very awkward to use, I was just concerned with "dead space". Which do you think would be less awkward the two 24s or one 12 and one 24 on the left, asthetically and functionally?

Theres alot of brick already in the house, as you can see from the pictures I've ref'd here.

Do you think that the breakfast bar there would make work in the kitchen awkward? Also, what door faces-I was contemplating either the RUBRIKs again, or some other glass front, or maybe the stainless . .

Here's some links to pictures. Don't laugh, we're in desperate need of a new kitchen:

Hey Tom,

I can't view your kitchen plans because I'm on a Mac (the IKEA planner software isn't compatible), but I just wanted to say that I'm in a house of a similar vintage (also a brick row house) and with a very similar kitchen layout...I even have a hearth to deal with, just like you!

We wound up going with very modern, freestanding UDDEN units (stainless steel countertops, open shelving) instead of trying to fake-match the original Victorian details in our house. I couldn't be happier. I'm a huge fan of letting old and new complement each other, as long as the contrast between the two is strong enough (e.g. colonial kitchen in a Victorian house = EW, no. Industrial modern kitchen in a Victorian house = YAY, yes.).

Looking forward to seeing how your space progresses!

Thanks for the pix! Now that I see the kitchen, I definitely see white and red. It would be fabulous.

I think the 24 on the fridge wall and the 12 on the stove wall in that corner will be better for you, IF your measurements are accurate. If you find that wall is a bit smaller than you thought, go with the 9" PERFEKT unit on the left end of the stove wall instead of the 12" cabinet.

A glass front between the window and door is the perfect cabinet there, with all the glass.

I think if you already have a table there, a breakfast bar will be less obtrusive. The overhang can be 10" so you'd have 22" from the wall intruding into the space. If you're worried, though, get a wall mounted table instead of a bar mounted on cabinets. That will fold down to nothing when not in use. You can still have the upper horizontals there.

What sink are you considering for the corner?

I'll see if I can find pix of red and white cabinets together.

I was probably thinking of the Ikea corner sink:

Or possibly this Blanco sink:

Laufert: I was researching doing the sink in the corner for our kitchen and some people had said that the 'bat-wing' sink (the one you posted) is a problem because if you switch the faucet from one side to the other, the water hits the center and splashes all over. I don't want to put a damper on it; just wanted to give you info.

You can take a sink base unit and turned it diagonally in the corner; of course this uses more floor space.
