I've been blogged!
How complicated is my dream kitchen?

These categories are intended as guidelines only, as each area has it's own laws and each kitchen has it's own challenges, some of which are only revealed once you get started! But regardless of DIY or professionally installed, by deciding up front that you "want to keep it simple" or knowing that your dreams are "complex," you'll have a better feel for what you can tackle yourself, how much it will cost and who you need to involve in order to live the dream!

Basic- everything stays the same, you're just replacing the old for the new (cabinets, counters, backsplash). No layout changes, no walls or windows moving, no plumbing or electrical moves, appliances may be swapped out but are the same size and configuration. Flooring may stay the same. Cosmetic update. Could require permits.

Simple- same as above, however, minor changes to layout to acommodate better workflow or different appliances. Examples include adding an island or pantry, changing the work triangle. Minor plumbing and electrical, possibly adding a dishwasher where there was none, or switching from electric to gas, going with a cooktop and wall oven vs a range. New flooring required. Electrical/plumbing permits pulled, construction permits depending on area.

Moderate- Tear out of interior due to damage or age, including old flooring to subfloor, significant lighting changes requiring drywall work, significant plumbing or electrical (upgrades to electrical service, moving plumbing to opposite sides of the work area, etc). Significant reconfiguration of the physical layout. All new surfaces. Permits pulled for electrical/plumbing, construction permits depending on area.

Complex- total to partial gutting of existing space. New subfloor and flooring. New heating/cooling. Moving walls, windows or doorways. Possible addition to existing home, or new construction. New drywall, significant electrical and plumbing (water and gas) work. Likely to involve various building tradespeople. Always involves pulling building permits, multiple permits pulled. Installation of new cabinets, counters, flooring etc. less than 50% of worktime.

With those in mind, I would rate most people capable of Basic to Simple, with some motivated enough to tackle Moderate with assistance from tradespeople. We're here to help you through any of the planning of any of the above- and we've got experience with all of them, both with IKEA and non-IKEA parts.

Hey this is really nice post describing each and every category of kitchen. My mother wanted to improve her kitchen, This will definitely help her to choose the best according to her choice.

I want to thank you for these categories. Your descriptions have already given me a good basis in terms of updating my kitchen set-up.
