Glass shelf flexes?

I have installed the 36" glass shelves and found them just a bit thin. They flex easily in the middle. I am sure it is tempered and probably be OK but it looks like I will be restricted to light stuff like wine glasses, I put a small 2 qt cast iron cookware in the middle to test, I am not comfortable with the flex it created.

It would be nice to have a glass shop make shelves about 1/8" thicker and a nicer finish job on the edges.

What do you guys put on the glass shelves?

Re: Glass shelf flexes?

PoorOwner - I think people typically put pretty stuff that they want to be seen on glass shelves behind glass doors - things like glasses, vases, pottery or other artwork that is a nice accent to the kitchen or just plain nice to look at. I can't imagine putting cast iron cookwear on a glass shelf (in real life where that's where it's "home" would be). I've got several billy bookcases with glass shelves that I use for displaying/storing vases, pottery, glasses etc - and am really surprised by how much weight the billy glass shelves can hold! I think one of the keys with glass shelves is to have a somewhat even distribution of weight across the shelf.

Hope this helps!
Doreen

Re: Glass shelf flexes?

Hi Doreen, some cast iron cookware can be pretty too. I have attached a picture of the Staub enamel cast iron I recently bought -- too bad, no kitchen to use it in yet

I did some more tests it looks like it is better to put near the ends so it doesn't load up the middle of the shelf.

Re: Glass shelf flexes?

Glass shelves are tempered, but still only rated for about half the weight of the regular ones (21.5lbs vs. 43lbs). I would not put cast iron, however pretty, on them. Try a regular shelf with edgebanding to match your doors and it will look pretty and support the iron!

Re: Glass shelf flexes?

My Le Creuset Goose Pot lives in a drawer by the range- it's beautiful and empty it's easily the heaviest item in my kitchen outside of the countertops and the major appliances. I guess it never occurred to me to put something like that on a glass shelf as those are typically in shallow wall cabs and shallow wall cabs with glass shelves say "crystal and barware" to me. All the time. Sometimes I have to turn on white noise so I can't hear them saying it. Just sayn'. They have never whispered "cast iron"...
