Kitchen Plan + countertop + wall-as-base questions
We're moving on to the renovation of our kitchen and I would appreciate feedback on the attached plan. Walls are fixed, the confines are shown on the plan. The two "windows" on the bottom of the plan actually open to another room, and we don't want to modify that. The sill height at those windows is also too low to consider for normal countertops -- see the second question below. Suggestions welcome!
I'm also have two questions about countertops and using wall units as base units.
We would like to use birch or beech Numerar wood countertops, but the size of the kitchen will require joints, both in-line and corner. If you look at the plan, you'll see the length of the counter that runs under the sink will require a joint somewhere. Additionally, to make the corner going to the stove, we'll need a joint. We had a Numerar birch top on an island in a previous house, and it had rounded edges. How have you joined Numerar sections to be relatively seamless -- both inline and perpendicular?
The next question is simpler -- have any of you used a wall cabinet as a base cabinet? On the bottom of the plan image -- item #17 -- we have a opening into an adjacent dining area with a sill 28" from the floor. It is a great place for a coffeepot and storage beneath. Can I just put legs on an 18" high over-refrigerator cabinet + a countertop and use it as a base? Or are there issues with the way wall cabinets are built that prevent that?
Re: Kitchen Plan + countertop + wall-as-base questions
Hi, you will have to cut off a slit of the counter top so you have a unrounded edge for the joining. Pretty much butt together, Lee valley sells the connector to join counter top. The perpendicular joint you might have to get creative, but really I think a little groove there doesn't look too bad.
You can use the wall cabs as base many people have done this, it would be more like a seat height on the one you proposed. As a seat it would be good to use some wood to reinforce it. As an alternative consider using 24" high wall cab to bring it close to the window sill.
Re: Kitchen Plan + countertop + wall-as-base questions
You can certainly use the wall cabinets as base cabinets. You will have to cut off the little lip on the bottom back of the cabinet, which is there to compensate for the slight offset from the wall that happens with the suspension rail. You wouldn't need to use the suspension rail, just attach it like the deeper base cabinets. And of course you'd have to use different legs, like Capita, because the holes are not there for the pegs on the
Akurum
legs.
Akurum definition
Akurum is the North American equivalent of FAKTUM; that is the fitted, frameless, component kitchen cabinet line, which when paired with door and drawer fronts as well as interior accessories makes up the full kitchen cabinet system.
Re: Kitchen Plan + countertop + wall-as-base questions
If you're willing to take a hacksaw to the legs, you can cut the pegs off of the
akurum
legs and then screw them to the bottom of your wall cabinets. We did this for the back of our 36" deep peninsula.
I highly recommend cutting the lip off BEFORE you put the cabinet together. If you only have the one, you could probably even do it with a hacksaw, but a jigsaw or table saw would be faster.

if you don't want to be bothered with cutting off...
the cabinet lip for a wall cabinet used as base, you can just use the rail. i had rail left over so i did this and it worked out well. i screwed on the legs, put it up against the wall and marked where holes. then i used those marks to install the hanging rail.
