A couple questions about cover panels

Okay, a few questions about cover panels, as I have no experience and my contractor has only hung face-frame cabinets:

1. The first question is about the area above the cooktop for the fan. The fan cabinet is, necessarily, shorter than the adjacent cabinets, and I'd want the sides of the adjacent cabinets covered with cover panels. Do I then plan for the cover panel to go the whole way up the cabinet (and, presumably, use cover panels or some other sort of spacing on the base cabinets so they'll line up), or is there a way to cover only the parts of the adjacent cabinets that stick down farther than the fan cabinet?

2. I don't plan to have under-cabinet lights. I would like to cover the bottom of the cabinets with a cover panel that sticks out a bit past the doors, maybe with a piece of molding attached. (I'm going for a traditional look.) Any problem with this?

3. I want to have a more substantial crown molding than Ikea offers. Can I use a cover panel in the same way on the top of the cabinets, attaching the crown molding to the front of the cover panel? (I want the crown to be flush with the door, not with the cabinet.)

Thanks so much for the advice!

.. Joann

Re: A couple questions about cover panels

I can answer your first question. Yes, you can cover the sides of the cabinet with a cover panel but you don't need a full panel for each side. One cover panel can be cut down to the size you need. Thus there will not be the need to use any filler on your base cabinets.

Hope you get answers to your other questions soon.

Re: A couple questions about cover panels

#2 sounds like using the edge of a cover panel in the same way you'd use the narrow edge of a deco strip. No reason not to. You might also check Ikea's shelving to see if there's a suitable shelf that could be cut for the same purpose. I used some lovely oak shelving (apparently discontinued) for a filler piece and some toekicks with Tidaholm.

In short, cover panels and filler panels can be cut up for a variety of purposes.

Re: A couple questions about cover panels

With regards to crown molding.

we did ours flush with the cabinet. you can see photos from my link in my sig line. The reason for that was that we continued the crown all the way around the room.

In order to make it flush with the door you would have to put a block / filler on top of the cabinet that protrudes and then attach your crown to that. you can do it but it is finicky work.
