This forum is great and I am so happy that I came across it before I ordered the cabinets. I am interested in the Akurum Stat White cabinets.
I have a small kitchen with two windows and have been struggling with the design. My large fridge and stove don't help... and I have decided to trade in my double sink for a single 24" sink so I could add a dishwasher.
I am having trouble adding a cabinet on top of the dishwasher - not sure why the program won't let me do it... Also, is there a special dishwasher cabinet? I can't seem to find one... what do people do?
Any input/ideas would be great. My room is 7'3" X 10"10 with windows on two walls...
I'm not good with layout, but I can tell you that there is no cabinet for a dishwasher...it's just enclosed. You'll install a panel (with L-brackets) that will provide support to your countertop over the dishwasher. There's a FAQ on the Fansite side (click on Home in the upper right corner of your screen, then navigate to FAQ's and look for End Run Dishwasher -- this is essentially what you'd do with the refrigerator there.
I'm sure you'll get some ideas from folks better skilled with the planner than I. Btw, welcome to the forums! To get a head start, check out the Mission Statement thread...I know the planning crew always likes to read one when helping with planning. http://www.ikeafans.com/forums/forum5/561.html
Good luck!

Lee, I have a hard time judging measurements from these images, so I'm not sure how helpful my comments will be. Is it possible you're trying to put a cabinet above the dishwasher that's too big for the space, and that's why the planner won't let you? Also, if a cabinet will fit there, you might consider doing a glass front -- or skip a cabinet and put a shelf unit there, to make that area less visually heavy.
What type of stove do you have? In most places, it's against code to have a gas stove under a window. I'm not sure if there are any rules about placement of electric stoves.
It looks like you've got those cool horizontal cabinets over the stove. The stupid Ikea website has a dead link, so I can't verify my recollections, but I believe the doors on the horizontal cabinets are regular doors turned sideways -- in the case of Stat, that means the lines would be going sideways, instead of vertically (as they do on every other cabinet in the kitchen). If this bothers you, you could always do the glass-door horizontal cabinets.
I don't know if any of this was any help, but these are just the first things that came to mind when I saw your plan. I'm sure some of the design divas will be along with better advice soon -- though it's a holiday weekend in the U.S., so don't be frustrated if it takes a few days.
Lee bug, your elevation and floor plan are different. On the elevation (front view) the dishwasher is on the left and on the floor plan it is on the right. Here are my observations on each:
Dishwasher on right: You have cabinets on each side to support the counter = good. You have appliances on either side of the corner cabinet, both of which stick out beyond the front of the corner cabinet, especially the stove. This makes it near impossible to open the corner cabinet door = bad.If you purchase one of the more flush dishwashers you could possibly have the hinge on the dishwasher side and be able to open the doors. placing a filler next to the cabinet on the dishwasher side will also help. Your sink is not centered on the window.
Dishwasher on left corner cabinet is free to open (hinge it on the sink wall side) =good. No cabinet to the left of the dishwasher to support your counter (see previous post) Use a tall panel next to the refrig and attach to it as described.
Another issue I see is the space left for a refrig. You post that your kitchen is 10'10". Doing the math 130" - (37 corner +12" base + 24" sink + 24" dishwasher + 5/8" end panel + 3/8" minimum allowance for walls out of square etc.) = 32" for a refrig. Ouch! Refrig's are getting bigger and bigger. Many are 36" wide. Looking to the future and for resale value I do not recommend you leave such a narrow space for the refrig. May I suggest:
Eliminate the 12" base cabinet and go with a 30" sink base. You can then fit in a bigger sink. You will have 32" + 6" gained = 38" refrigerator space. Installing a 36" wide over refrig cabinet in a cornerrequires having a space towards the corner wall to allow the cabinet door to open 90 degrees for access and be able to clear the handle and your pinkies. Guess how much space you should leave? 2". Ta dah. you have used the extra 2" (38"-36" cabinet =2"). This also gives a 36" wide refrig clearance for the compressor to have air circulation.
What great feedback! I am so glad that I found this forum...
First of all, I should have explained it better in my first post, but the wondow above the oven is actually a pass through to the living room. A hole in the wall with shutters.
I redesigned the kitchen with the dishwasher next to the stove on the other wall. This will allow for me to add 2" around the fridge, which I hadn't even thoughabout as well as to put in a larger sing cabinet. It also allows me to centre my sink with the window which looks much better I think.
The only thing that I am worried about is the distance that the dishwasher is from the sink... would that pose a problem as far as plumbing? Also, there is 6" to the right of the stove before the entrance which I would have really liked to include a little countertop. But they don't have 6" base cabinets... I know 6" isn't alot, but I thought it would be enough for a little area to finish off the stove. You see there is a hallway there. Hard to explain but I tried to add it to the picture.
Thanks again! Don't stop.... I need more advice....
leebug: I'm curious as to what is on the other 2 walls. I don't see any door openings (Although you said there was one to the right of stove - on the stove wall or the other wall?). Is it possible to utilize any of that area for cabinet space?
If only.... the one wall next to the fridge has a window and a little table, and the wall across from the sink is a half wall with stairs to the basement. Little kitchen that is for sure....
How important is it to have seating at a table in the kitchen? I'd love to see the dishwasher move to the sink wall and the stove move to the center of the stove wall with counterspace on either side. I'd also close up the passthrough, they are usually never used to actually "pass through" anything.
I agree. With limited space you should close-up the pass-through, center the stove, and you can get more wall cabinet space. You need some counter space to the right of your stove. With the dishwasher next to the stove, it pulls down in front of the sink and would be a problem loading.
Do you access the stairs through the kitchen and if so, where?
